Today I was at the library and my XP Home Edition pc froze.  I don't really remember exactly when it happened but I should have expected it after the updates came through on the 11th.

I don't know if anyone will even want to help me fix an old xp like this as you guys have helped me before.  My hope is that we can get it right at least so that I can keep it around and load Linux.

From what I remember I was watching some youtube vids to learn how to use Macrium Reflect to back up xp and had downloaded it the day before.  Then I took a break and came back and started pc and all was frozen.  I then ran avast and mbam quick scans in Safe Mode with no infections.  Then I used System Restore to get back up and running.  After this I had some issues running avast and mbam and had to reload them.  I then ran an avast BootTime scan and and the two quick scans again in reg. mode for good measure with no infections.  After this I loaded Fastone Viewer from Library pc onto my usb so I would have a tool for repair.  I then tried to install it and avast detected a virus:

Infekce zablokovana

Infection: XML: Adware-A [Adw]

I am using it right now even though I probably should not lol.  I am tempted to just go to W7 unless this can be fixed easily.  If it can than I would just go to Linux due to finances and leave it on pc but not using it online.

Please run these for me

Please download MiniToolBox   to desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:

* List content of Hosts
* Flush DNS
* Report IE Proxy Settings
* Reset IE Proxy Settings
* Report FF Proxy Settings
* Reset FF Proxy Settings
* List last 10 Event Viewer log
* List Installed Programs
* List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
NOTE : Please close or save all work, as the computer will be Rebooted
Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button. (only once)
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.
Next: Click on the Clean button (only once) to remove the selected items.
You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be close so that the infections can be removed.
Click on OK, and then OK again to confirm the reboot.
When cleaning process is complete a log (AdwCleaner[S0].txt ) of what was removed will be on your desktop.
Please copy and the paste this log in your next post.

A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Thanks for the help!

I did not see anywhere that you could un-check an item but I did see the two that I don't need.  Therefore I did not click "Clean" I am not sure if I need these because of downloading a browser or something? and I never use them.  Perhaps I am supposed to just highlight them one at a time and "Clean" each one, because I can only highlight one at a time.  This is after selecting the "Chrome" Tab.

Computer seems to be working fine as far as just internet.  Have not been to email and don't want to go to any other sites until this is resolved.

  According to Speccy you have 1 GB of RAM.  That combined with your 1.66 GHz processor is insufficient to run Windows 7.  If you added another GB of RAM, you could probably get it to work, but I have little doubt that you'd not like the performance.  You can download Ubuntu or Mint Linux and it'll run just fine on that computer.  That's what I recommend you do.  Personally I like Mint better because it's more like Windows and it comes packaged with more apps to start with.  You can go to linuxmint.com and download the ISO and burn it to a DVD, boot from the DVD and in 3 minutes time you can be up and running in trial mode without having to install anything.  It's free and supported.

Good luck.

Everyone with a computer should back his system up to an external hard drive regularly.  :thumbsup:

wpgwpg, thanks, the more feedback I get the better I feel about doing migrating to Linux.  I have read though that Ubuntu is the best for older hardware?  Is Mint an Offspring of openSuse and Ubuntu.

Also I ran the tool that determines if you can run W7 and it said I could? but I am sure that performance would not be the best.  Although I do not have much on my pc and like to keep it clean as possible.

Quote from BC site:

"A lot of you may fear that your new PCs hardware will not be recognised correctly. This should not be too much of a problem these days, as the support for the major distributions seems to have caught up on this too. However, if you wish to be on the safe side, then it is best to concentrate on the major distributions such as openSuse, Ubuntu (or one of its offspring), or Mandriva. If you wish to have something that is close to the look and feel of windows, you will have to use Freespire or Xandros. I have also been told that PCLinuxOs is a good starting point too."

 Yes Mint Linux is based on Debian and Ubuntu.  You can read about it here

http://www.linuxmint.com/about.php .  The good news is that there's no reason why you can't try as many different distros as you want.  All you have to do is download an ISO file, burn it to a DVD, and boot from it.  You can run it in trial mode without having to install anything.  I don't have anything as old as you, but it sure runs well on my 5 year old desktop and my 7 year old one.  One quote from Mint's web page "Started in 2006, Linux Mint is now the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu."  I guarantee you it'd run circles around Windows 7 on your computer.   :thumbsup:

 I'd have to say that masochism would be too mild a word for anybody who wants to run Windows 7 in 1 GB of RAM.   :axe:  I'd guess it would be about like getting on an Interstate with a car that would only go 45 mph.

Good luck.

LOL, okay I will have to take a look, and yes I don't think I would like to use a slow computer with w7, if I did that I'd get more RAM at least.  I want to avoid all that as I don't know how long this laptop will last.

Which one should I try? 17 or Debian?

 Let me say that I'm no Linux expert.  I've just used it enough to know the basics, but I'm convinced it's the perfect solution for folks with older XP computers who don't want to or can't upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.  What impresses the h*ll out me is how Linux just boots and runs with no installing, fooling around with drivers, updates, or other BS.  Like everything I'm sure there're some exceptions to this, but it sure works well on the several computers I've tried it on.  It has Firefox, it finds your Internet connection and all you have to get on the Internet is click on Firefox.  It has LibreOffice which is mostly compatible with MS Office, and it takes a whole lot less resource than any current version of Windows, probably even including XP.

Good luck.
