There is a good chance that the drive needs to be replaced.  Does there seem to be a pattern?  Does it read pressed CDs and DVDs?  Does it read disks it wrote?  Does it read disks written by other drives?

my last drive was cdrom not dvd, this one is just a few years old and not that used

i was just about to use it on a regular basis to back up old disc that contain pictures and videos

was going to take the files from the cdrom disc and move them into the dvd disc siince they can take more data

disc that it read a week ago, wont read now.

If you've got a CD cleaning disk, a disk with a little brush on the bottom, you might try that.  Otherwise I would suggest replacing the drive.

Not being used isn't much better than constantly being used.  You can get a build up on the lens that results in being unable to read disks.
