It seems that there is no hard disk activity at start up ( no scratching sound ) and an attempt to work in safe seems to be futile. I don't even get more than 2 seconds of time to make a selection at boot, ( ex. F3, F8, etc...) it quickly attempts windows without success. I get a black screen with the mouse arrow frozen at some point on screen, usually centre.
In an attempt to diagnose and repair using xp install disk it made matters worse cause for some reason it will not exit setup.
This all began after an audio malfunction, ( no sound and no mic ), with windows running particularly staggered when scrolling. Any idea of how to resolve. I am willing to wipe everything out and reinstall if there is a possibility that it will solve the problem. Thank you.

Try downloading BartPE and run the antivirus from there. If your OS is corrupted you may be able to recover it this program. You will need to download. unzip to a folder, and burn an image to a CD. Boot from the CD.
