Hello,

I have been struggling for a week trying to get my father in laws laptop working again. It is on Vista, 64bit. Upon start up it gets the following error. logonui.exe unable to locate component  Winmm.dll is missing. When I click OK it continues to boot but it can't authenticate anyone so a lot of programs won't start. It boots into safe mode with no apparent errors. I tried copying a Winmm.dll and re-registering it but that failed. Here is the log from Hijack this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'll add more information on the problem and what I have tried so far.
This computer has had the problem of looping on updates for months now. It would get updates but after restart, while it was trying to configure them it would say download failed and revert everything. I spent days on that trying to uninstall updates and reinstall them. I got it to where it had all but 2 updates and couldn't get any further. My father in law didn't want to have to reinstall all of his programs so he opted to put it off for a while to see if I came up with a fix. In the meantime, more updates tried to come in and failed. Also it looks like they installed office 2007. That may have been when this new problem started. They also installed adobe flash the same day.

This is what I have tried, in order.

1. Last known good configuration, nothing.

2. Malwarebytes
That found several things but nothing that looked too bad and removing them didn't help.

3. Startup Repair from Install disk (said found no problems)

4. System from Install Disk
I thought this one was going to work. There were lots of restore points. I picked one just before they installed office. It ran for a while then said the restore point was no good and reverted. No problem, I could just pick another. Nope. When I went back to restore all the previous restore points were just gone.

5. Clean boot

6. SFC /Scannow
Found some errors. Said it couldn't fix them all

7. ComboFix

8 Rkill

9. Slimcleaner Free registry repair

10. Argente utilites.

11. Uninstall MS office
That didn't work at all. without the logonUI I'm not authenticated and it won't let me uninstall stuff.

12. I tried to uninstall SP2 but couldn't even find it.

I think that is everything. Hope someone here has a few more ideas.

Hello thepatv, and welcome on Bleeping Computer. :welcome:

I will be helping with your computer problems.

Before starting please note the following:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know
  • Do not make any changes on your own to the computer (installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, running scanners or other tools, etc.) without instructions to do it
  • Please read every post completely and perform all steps in the specified order. If you can't understand something or you encounter problems please stop and let me know
  • Do not attach logs, use code or quote boxes. Just copy and paste the text unless directed otherwise
  • Even if things appear to be better, it does not mean we have finished. Follow my instructions and reply back until I tell you that your computer is clean.
  • Please reply using the Add Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen

I'm analyzing what you posted, but since some days have passed is better to have some updated logs.

If the problem is not solved, in your next reply please post a fresh DDS log and the updated Attach.txt file.

Regards

Here is a fresh DDS. I turned the computer off as soon as I ran and saved it. I will not turn it back on until you all tell me something to try. So this DDS should be could the next time you have a chance to work on my issue.

Thanks!

Hi Pat :)

Please download FRST 64bit, save it to your desktop, then:

  • Double-click on the FRST icon to run the tool
  • When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer
  • Check all checkboxes under the Optional Scan section
  • Click on the Scan button

When finished, FRST will show three logs, FRST.txtAddition.txt and Shortcut.txt and save them in the same location where FRST is.

In your next reply please paste the contents of the FRST.txt file and attach the Addition.txt and the Shortcut.txt files.

Regards

I can only get things to run in safe mode. Is that OK?

It won't open. I get an error saying the Winmm.dll file is missing.

Hello Pat :)

Do you still have the old logs from your scans?
I would to see the logs from Combofix, Malwarebytes and Rkill.

Please post what you have in your next reply, thanks.

Hi Pat,

could you explain better what happens when you boot in normal mode and you cannot authenticate anyone?
Is the screen for the log in not shown, or is it shown but it cannot accept any user or password? Or something else?

About the Winmm.dll, did you copy it from the Vista installation disk?

In the next step we need to have an USB stick and the Vista installation DVD, please be sure to have them handily.

Regards
