I downloaded a small game mod file onto my desktop, it's compressed as 7Z and when I double-left clck on it an advert comes up saying "Buy Winzip to extract file".

And if I right-click it there's no option such as "Extract All".

So do I have to buy Winzip?

Hi,

The program came zipped in the free program 7Zip. I use it all the time since my copy of Winzip expired. You can download it here www.7-zip.org (it's free). I just used it las night to zip up some files to send to a friend. I like it.

Hope that helps,
Cynthia

There are plenty of free, better altenratives than WinZip...I also use 7Zip but play around with some of them and go with one you are comfortable with.

Use Google...type in "alternative to WinZip" as search string...try a few.

I'm shocked they started charging for winzip actually... Of the zipping type programs it is one of the weakest.

Thanks everybody, I might as well try 7zip first from-

http://www.7-zip.org/

But I see there are two download options-

32 bit x86 (exe)

64 bit x64 (msi)

which one shall I go with?

(I'm Win 7 Home Premium)

PS- Yes, I thought Winzip was free forever when I downloaded it a while back, but apparently it had a time-expiry date which has now expired which is why it keeps pestering me to buy it!
