Hello Everyone,

I have had this problem for the past week or so on and off where my computer will covert all free memory into cached memory. At first I ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and ESET online scanner, it reported a couple problems so I removed them and restarted; everything seemed fine.

Now every couple days this process occurs again and it is starting to worry me. I have run both programs again and nothing is being picked up.

It is not causing any physical slowness in general operation (using chrome or one to two programs), but I cannot download anything through services like steam now because the download simply stops. It also causes major issues with performance on any game I run when the free memory is 0.

One thing I should mention is that the free memory slowly goes down until 0 if i'm not running anything, but if I am and I close the program some free memory will come back (100-200mb) then it will be converted into cached again.

So I am unsure of what to do, as this is a reoccurring problem I cant seem to solve.

Thank you for your time,

Mat

Well...system manufacturer and model?

How much RAM installed?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Please post the Malwarebytes log and the Eset online scanner results.

To find your Malwarebytes log, download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.

To open the log double click on mbam-check.exe on your desktop.  When the log opens, scroll down toward the bottom of the log to Quarantined Items.  Copy and paste this in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

- "Free memory" going down to zero is actually a good sign. It means that Win 7 fills the memory with cached data.

- "Cached memory" is the amount of "Modified" + "Standby" memory (See "Resource Monitor"). When "Modified" grows to a giant size and won't be reduced over time then there's something wrong. It also would explain why that "Free memory" going to zero is hampering your system.

- Do you have a SSD installed ?

Did you use a program that was meant to be run on Win XP or Vista ? Memory management on XP differs from that in Win 7.

Post a picture of what "Resource monitor" is showing.

- Did you install any programs recently ? Any memory, driver, program, etc. optimizer besides Cleanmem ? Anything that could interfere with Windows' memory management ?

- Disable Windows Defender. You already got AVAST running.

- Are both the MS Firewall & AVAST firewall running ? If yes, then disable one of them.

Windows Defender is a antimalware / antispyware, in Windows 7 it is not an antivirus.  This can be run with an antivirus without creating conflicts.  As part of a regular maintenance I would suggest adding a antimalware which is better than Windows Defender, that would be Malwarebytes Antimalware.

1) I don't believe so, nothing comes to mind.

2) I disabled windows defender and replaced it with Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

3) I am using the free version of AVAST so I don't know if it has a firewall, or at least I don't see any options for one? If there is could you tell me how to disable it or at least make sure it is running? Does it matter which one I disable?

Does this problem persist in Safe Mode?

1) I have no idea at this point, I only ran it in safe mode when I thought I had a virus so I ran the malwarebytes, ESET and defraggler.

2) I replaced Windows defender like you said, but how do I make sure it is running properly?

@WILLY

Hey willy,

I completely forgot to respond to your earlier message because of all the processes I was asked to being run. I don't know if this information will help any more or not but it does not hurt to provide it.

1) I don't have any SSDs.

2) I don't think I have any programs intended for xp or vista, if there are any programs that are not compatible let me know and I can try and give more information on anything specific.

3) I attached a capture, don't mean to be a pain but I am having a difficult time navigating the forum.

One thing I have noticed is that sometimes its stable but once it starts dropping in free memory, I cant really stop it. Even if I close any open applications or end process it just returns back to 0.

Thank you for you time,

Mat

P.S. I don't mean to be rude or difficult to anyone on the forum, I am just really lost with this lately and just frustrated. Hopefully it does not come off as rude, but if it does please know that I appreciate everyone's help, and that it is not intentional in the slightest

- No problem. I am glad you replied. I understand your frustrations. I have seen this horrible problem before. Something interferes with/hampers Windows' memory management. A temporary (!!!!) solution could be switching off the "Superfetch" Service. It should keep Windows from increasing the "cached" part of the memory (too fast).

- I have the "paid for" version of AVAST and that includes a firewall. The free version doesn't have a firewall. My mistake. But the free version seems to have anti spyware software.

http://www.avast.com/nl-nl/compare-antivirus

- Use e.g. Ccleaner (Tools, startup) to disable (not remove !!!) a number of programs that are run upon start up and in Task Scheduler. Remove programs you don't use. Perhaps one of those programs is/was the cause of the problem. (think Services). Use Ccleaner to clean the content of the "C:\windows\prefetch" folder.

- The error report (see above) reports problems with the file "\MaxxAudioAPOShell64.dll" multiple times. It seems the file is corrupted. Do you know what program it belongs to ? If yes, then try if removing & re-installing the program solves the problem.

- Virusses/Malware always mess(es) with one's system. After removing malware it's a good idea to run "Windows Repair". Follow the instructions provided (disable internet & antivirus) and tick all boxes (including #4 "Register system files") in the main repair screen. The program puts A LOT OF things in Windows back to their DEFAULT state (including enabling Defender). The program should take 25 to 40 minutes to complete all repairs. It could repair Windows memory management as well. If it did then I certainly would like to know !!!!

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows-repair-all-in-one/

Perhaps others have more/better suggestions ?

Please answer my question regarding Safe Mode.

The following error is one of the prominent ones in the MiniToolBox report.   Skipping: Eap method DLL path validation failed. Error: typeId=17

If this behavior does not persist in Safe Mode you should run a Clean Boot to determine if the problem is related to a Service or a Startup item.

You should also run sfc /scannow to see if there are any integrity issues with Windows files.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Start orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

A page similar to the one below will open.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.

To find sfc /scannow log, type cmd in the Search programs and files box,

cmd will appear above the search box under Apps., right click on it and choose Run as administrator, this will open the Elevated Command Prompt.  This will look simlare to the image below.

elevatedcommandpromptw7_zpseba8c499.png

copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Click on this to open the log, copy it and paste it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

There's a program that could provide (for the time being) some relief. Sysinternals' RAMMAP offers the user the option to (manually) collapse the "Standby" part of the memory. It would give you more time to search for a solution for this problem.

@ dc3

Thanks for the reply,

I entered safe mode and ran the minitoolbox scan again but that error you mentioned still showed up when I only ticked ``run the last 10 errors`box. I can post the text for that if it would help at all, just let me know.

Unfortunately I ran the sfc/scannow, forgot the spaces and though it would mess it up so i closed the program. I found out after it was still running when I tried to enter it in with the spaces and it said it was already being used by another program. I ran it a second time to make sure I could see what was going on, and it detected that there was no integrity programs (but i think this was just because it scanned a second time).

When it did finish I entered the "findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" into the search box but nothing has appeared on my desktop. Should I try this again differently or have I shot myself in the foot on this approach?

Thanks,

Mat

@Willy

Hey willy,

I have a couple things I wanted to ask/say in regards to your advice.

1) The RAMMAP works beautifully and does help a ton, so thank you very much!

2) Should I simply run the windows repair first and tackle the start ups after because most will be re enabled after anyway?

3) I am currently going through the CCleaner (will stop if I should do #2 first) and disabling startups but something came to mind. I have a program called soluto that does the same thing for me. I have a lot of things directly tied to this so should I simply uninstall it, reboot then manually going through the startup options again?

Thanks,

Mat

- "Windows Repair" (WR) doesn't have an impact on the things you do/change with Ccleaner. WR puts A LOT OF things "deep under the bonnet" in Windows to their default setting. And virusses/malware like to mess with/change those Windows settings. It could also be the cause of your memory problem.

- Soluto: I am not familiar with it. Had to Google it what the program does. It seems to give advise what to enable & disable upon start up ? I would disable it with Ccleaner and see how things turn out. Use common sense.

(the advantage of disabling things with Ccleaner is that it can enable those start up items as well. Then you don't need to re-install those programs again.).

- "SFC /scannow": Re-read CAREFULLY DC3's instructions. You made a mistake.

- SFC /scannow is also included in WR.

I have one more thing you could do in an attempt to solve this problem but try first the things mentioned above. I hope those things will solve the problem. Please report back how things went.
