Recently this has been happening: http://i.imgur.com/1Mc7v1B.png

So I ran a search and found this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/494636/service-host-local-system-cpumemory-hog/

Is this still the best way to go about fixing it? If so, would anyone mind looking at the results for me?

I'm on Windows 8.

I have an intel i72700k and 16 gigs of RAM.

Bonus problem: My CPU is going up to the high 50% range usage and I'm not running anything big or much of anything period, going into task manager reveals that a large majority of the CPU is being used by nothing.

  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Restore Points

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
NOTE. If you already have MBAM 2.0 installed scroll down.

  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

    • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    • A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.

  • Click Finish.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

End of JRT log
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's worth mentioning that JRT wiped my Chromium install and I had to get it again, it also really messed up several of my installed programs that I use on a daily basis.
ESET didn't act the way you said it would and I needed to get it on a trial, first it installed itself but then I needed to manually navigate the program to update it, then I had to manually start a scan initiate anything so I ran a "smart scan" there was no "scan archives" option. It found no issues and therefore had no log to share. It did take a very long time and it scanned everything I had on every drive.
EDIT: The programs weren't messed up just closed, couldn't open them until I reset though.
I think you installed Eset AV program instead of running online scan.
Check your list of installed programs.
If Eset is there, uninstall it.
You can't be running two AV programs.
How is computer doing?
Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java
Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.
Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.
Wow, I totally missed that online scan button.
Oh well, I ran a scan with Malware Bytes and Windows Defender (my usual stuff) turned off and then uninstalled it so no harm done right?
My computer is a little better but still not near what it used to get I am regularly using 30-40% sometimes even 50% of my CPU doing nothing and I'm at 50% memory doing nothing. I used to only hit these kinds of numbers when I ran a game or emulator with crazy settings while streaming it with high quality encoding. What's really strange is that in task manager the numbers don't add up. It says 50% at the top but the percentages under it only add to about maybe 10. Also programs that once took 0.1% CPU or something insignificant now take 1-3%, with some programs temporarily shooting up into the 10's or even 20's and it's a similar situation as far as memory is concerned too (numbers don't add up and programs using much more than usual)
Luckily the first link didn't give me any toolbar nonsense so that was nice.
I have installed both versions of Java for my 64 bit operating system.
JQS is oddly grayed out in the options.
In addition, certain programs have become very slow to respond where they were once very quick to respond. It's even weirder because it in no way correlates to the amount of CPU task manager claims its using.
Your computer is clean so you must have some other issues.
Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
NOTE. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 users right click on procexp.exe, click "Run As Administrator".
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Upload the file(s) here: http://www.sendspace.com/
Click on Browse button and navigate to the file you want to upload.
Click on Upload button.
Click on FIRST Copy Link button and paste the link in your next reply.
That doesn't look good.
Let's employ some more advanced tools to make sure everything is OK.
Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.
Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.
If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.
If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
Hello,
Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/537004/continuation-of-a-previous-topic-details-inside/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.
From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.
Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.
Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.
If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
