Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the place I should be placing this, but this is-- I believe a networking issue, so I'll apologize ahead of time.

I'm currently under Century Link, and I haven't had a problem until today. Until today, my modem has been running reliably; the problem now is that the modem is now kicking us off the network. I have no idea why...it just suddenly did so.

This happens to any device using the network.

Windows 7 troubleshooting says, "Windows can't connect to the hidden network"

This is my personal modem and it does use the WPA2-Personal security type. The only way to reconnect with the modem is to unplug and restart the modem--however this only temporarily solves the problem. The modem eventually kicks us off, or we will find us unable to connect to the modem on the next system reboot.

The OS with this problem is Windows 7 & 8.  I find that we kicked off fastest when we are watching any form streaming media via internet. But it takes a couple of hours when the system is idle or not using internet for personal use ( i.e software requiring internet connection such as antivirus)

Is this a problem with our computers? Because the modem is still online even when it kicks us.

Hi Dagrau. Did you already check the Centruy Link Troubleshooting Page? Have you tried seeing online if there are updated drivers for your laptop model by their support site? See also how to remove wireless network profile and then reconnect manually to check the difference. Have you tried resetting to factory default your modem router?

Yes, I've already consulted Century Link troubleshooting page. And I have tried a update for my driver, which had only made problems worse (i.e no Wi-Fi capabilities). However, I have not tried to remove the network. Why would I do this?

Thank you for the heads up boopme :)

Dagrau, do you have the avast trial or paid version?

According to your modem routeronline specs, the wireless standard capability or feature is B/G mode only which means it could pose a possibility that your newer devices connecting cannot maintain a robust network communication during high demand bandwith or longer usage. More information here. The only workaround but not always the solution are router firmware and network adapter drivers update, changing network channel from automatic mode to lesser frequently use signal (1,6,11). See also changing your DNS server address to ISP default or Public DNS server as it would help depending on internet activity usage.

I'm using the paid version of Avast Premier. SecureLine is another additional feature that Avast offers but at a price. I had tried the trail before. My current DNS server is under OpenDNS for parental control.

However the modem's built in diagnosis states:

Diagnostic Test Results
Test Results
Ethernet: PASS
DSL PHY: PASS
Encapsulation Type: ATM
Encapsulation Test: PASS
PPP Type: PPPoE
PPP Authentication: PASS
DNS Resolve: FAIL
DNS #1: FAIL
DNS #2: PASS

I don't really want to take down my parental control either....

Note:

Sometimes the DSL light is green with no light shown for Internet. Is this a problem with the modem or ISP?

I don't really want to take down my parental control either....

If the problem comes from DNS problems instead of router or ISP itself, then the only way to troubleshoot the problem is to revert back to the default DNS address or reinstall again the software/settings next time.

Yes. Activity, Power, DSL, LAN (if there is cable connected going to computer), Internet and WLAN should all be in green.

(Really late post, sorry!)

It was an outside problem with my ISP, they fixed something with the phone box outside! The drops aren't as often, but when it happens it usually fixes itself in less than a second.
