I have a Gateway NE71B laptop running Windows 8.1.  I created a shortcut to a text file located in a folder in Documents.  I moved the shortcut to a folder on Desktop.  I have been using the shortcut for some time now.  Today, when I tried to open the text file using the shortcut, I got a prompt asking for my network credentials.  I tried my computer log on pw, my Microsoft pw for downloading apps, and my Wireless Network Key.  I don't remember ever setting up any other password for computer access.  This has never happened with any other file or shortcut.  I was able to delete the shortcut and create another one that doesn't prompt for network credentials.  I am not networked with any other computer.  How can I keep this from happening again or at least find out what password it was asking for.

Hi,

Have you;

Reviewed the programs installed in the Programs and Features screen?

Run any security / anti malware scans to see if you might have picked up an infection?

Thanks
