I've been fiddling around with this problem for days and am getting frustrated. I get BSOD's a couple of times a day and it seems to happen on my wife's logon. About 2 minutes after logon (usually first time PC is booted for day), it will BSOD with various errors (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, SYSTEM_EXIT_OWNED_MUTEX,UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP and more) but all pointing to NTOSKRNL.EXE. I've updated all of my drivers (at least I've used the latest Dell drivers). I've run Driver Verifier on non-Microsoft drivers and was only getting an error on a Bitdefender 2010 driver. I've since updated to New Bitdefender and have no more driver problems but still get the BSOD. I've run Memtest+86 for 9 hours with nothing showing. I've run chkdsk and HD Tune on my Samsung disk with no problems. I've run SFC /SCANNOW with nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled IE 11 because it sometime happened in IE11. I did diagnostics on Outlook 2007 because it sometimes happens there. I can't find anything in Event logs around time of crash. I have WhoCrashed and Nirlauncher (Bluescreenview) which don't tell me much. I've dabbled with Windbg but am not well-versed in using it.

This morning I logged on as my wife and was monitoring Task Manager to see what was starting up in the first couple of minutes. Approximately 2 minutes after logon, I saw consent.exe and another process appear (unfortunately didn't see the 2nd process) and it immediately crashed. I was thinking that maybe something was trying to start that required UAC approval (in background) but again I could find nothing in the event logs. I have a Dell XPS 8000 with 8 gb memory and running WIndows 7. I can't find anything in her startup programs that is any different than mine.

Tomorrow I plan on opening the PC, see if it needs cleaning and reseat the memory.

Once the PC is up and running, it will run for hours without a problem. It only happens during startup, after initial logon.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. I've got it set up to not automatically reboot so I can see the errors so my wife is getting upset.

Have you tried a clean boot?/

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

You might get a clue here to whats causing your issue.

http://www.howtogeek.com/166911/reliability-monitor-is-the-best-windows-troubleshooting-tool-you-arent-using/

Reliability Monitor tracks the history of your computer — any time an application crashes, hangs, or Windows gives you a blue screen of death. It also tracks other important events, like when software is installed, or Windows Updates loads a new patch.

The driver is ntoskrnl.exe    ntoskrnl.exe+6d5be  C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This when I used Speccy to watch the CPU, and I started a Full scan with Kaspersky to stress the system, the CPU cores were at 70 degrees C.  Then crash.

I think its a thermal issue, and is due to a fault in the drivers creating a loop that causes overclocking.

I do know, that to fix this issue you have to delete all the old drivers ( to make this work.)

Or, save your files, and do a clean install or restore/ refresh.   I will keep looking.... bet you it has to do with the Updates that just pushed this last week.... NNNNOOOOO

Yes, you can, and that is a great first step to do.  I just havent got there yet, I like to find out why first, but please do this, just save your files first (just in case).  It shouldnt do anything to them, but better safe than sorry.  Then, do the restore.

Have you dont a memory test?  What I recommend, if you are game, is to do a 7 pass memory stress test to see if you get any errors.  If you go here you can down load a program to do just that.  Note the errors, if any.

Restart the computer and Do the restore.  After its finished run the RAM test again, compare results.

good luck

Hello! Thank you for your reply! I know about memtest86+. Would like your opinion on this!

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

Always learning!

PS I always have a current image of my OS on a external drive, so recovering data is not a problem!

A memory test is always good when having BSOD.

That is what I am goign to try first.  I have 16GB so its going to take forever.  For you not too bad a few hrs.  Dell in the XPS line should have some BIOS tools on startup.

Here is what they should be to get to them.

Diagnostics before windows using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen

There is a memory test in there as well, that will allow for different passes.  Takes forever.  That is what I would try, I think what you just posted is the same test, but doing it this way will allow you to run more than just the memory.  But yes, its a good test, and should be the first most people make.  Then running a third party one to compaire results

Being the original poster, I have an update. I just booted this morning but did not log on, waited the approximate 2 1/2 minutes without logging on and it crashed (IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL on NTOSKRNL.EXE). This means to me that it is not related to programs or tasks starting as a result of logon. I guess my wife was always the first person to boot in the morning. I'm guessing this means that it is due to a service starting up or task that get started at boot or memory problems. I must also state that while this is happening, I have Driver Verifier set for all non-Microsoft drivers so it doesn't appear to be driver related.

I don't know if is related but I started always shutting down because the system would hang coming out of hibernate.

In my case, this has been happening for over 2 months so I have no restore that I can reliably go to, especially seeing that I have uninstalled and updated numerous programs (anything that had BSOD associated with it in Google) as well as updating most drivers. I had Driver Booster installed and it said that all my drivers are "perfect" (after updating drivers at least to Dell update levels). I've uninstalled that program.

I'm going to reseat my memory boards and then try the Dell diagnostics and see what happens.

Maybe the fact that it happens when the system is "cold" suggests it could be memory although Memtest86+ showed nothing, but I didn't run it when "cold".

@czarboom,

Are you trying to find a solution for one of your problems, or is this a roundabout way of offering suggestions?

@thenit

Let's get some more information so we have a better idea of what is happening.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

I've read where Speccy has problems reading certain temps. If I use another utility (SIW), I get a temp of 22 c in SIW program.

I'm not sure why no Minidump files were found. I have a lot. I also removed my user IDs for privacy's sake.

I don't put a great deal of faith in any temperature or voltage software reports, there are too many variables.  I've run SIW side by side with Speccy and see the temps swing to the extreme in either, but occasionally they agree.  These can only be used as indicators.

I would like to find out what is going on with the Shadow Copy Service, please do the following and let me know what response you get.

Open the Start menu and type cmd in the Search programs and files box.  cmd will appear under Programs, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.  This will open the Elevated Command Prompt.

In the Elevated Command Prompt type in vssadmin list writers and press Enter.  You can copy and paste the command, if you type it in please notice the two spaces.

Please post the response.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I would also suggest running chkdsk /r .

Chkdsk /r checks for bad sectors on the hdd and recovers any readable information.

Click on the Start orb and type in cmd in the Search programs and files box.  When cmd is seen in Programs above the Search box right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Screenshot2.jpg

Type in chkdsk c:/r then press Enter.  Please notice the space between the chkdsk and the /r.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

Restart your computer to start the scan.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I ran the MiniToolbox and it didn't find them. I have over 30 minidumps sitting in C:\WIndows\Minidump. All around 400 Kb (small dump). What is the output from MinToolBox supposed to look like?

I did a full CHKDSK (segments included) yesterday (while rebooting). There were 3 orphaned files fixed and a couple of index entries.

I also get the odd reboot without any dump (just had one).

Results of Shadow Play (to be honest, I don't understand what Shadow Play is)...
