Hello,

One day not too long ago, one laptop started up on me. On bootup, I got an error message that says "

error accessing the system registry", followed by another error, " unexpected error; quitting". I went to

your website, downloaded several virus removal tools, and cleaned the infection, but the error still

happens. Today, I noticed that my desktop does the same thing. I ran RKill and Emsisoft's program, and it

is still running. So far, I have 2 objects detected:

*Trace.File.Application.AppInstall(A)*, located in Users\<username>\AppData\Local\<filename>

and

*Trace.Registry.Application.AdReg(A)*, located in the registry as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SOFTWARE\CLASSES

\WOW6432NODE\CLSID\{DE9028D0-5FFA-4E69-94E3-89EE8741F468}

I am sure that I can clean the virus, but how do I get these annoying errors to stop? Can I get registry access back up on bootup for both computers? Please let me know.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

p22002970.gif Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
NOTE. If you already have MBAM 2.0 installed scroll down.

  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

    • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    • A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.

  • Click Finish.
  • On the Dashboard, click the 'Update Now >>' link
  • After the update completes, click the 'Scan Now >>' button.
  • Or, on the Dashboard, click the Scan Now >> button.

p22002970.gifDownload Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE to your Desktop.
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

I ran ESET Online Scanner, and it took a REALLY long time. It did find something, but I forgot to export the text file. It was a variant of WIn32/(something) ( then 4 lettters in upper case, I think 2 of them were AL) Trojan. I am sorry. I ran the scan again, but ti came up clean. When I do all of this to my laptop with the same issue, hopefully I will come up with the same Trojan.

After finding ESET found something, I am still getting those error messages on startup. I'm sure that we are not done diagnosing yet, so I'll be more careful to follow your directions to the letter. Sorry about the ESET text file thing.

I need to know exact wording of any error you're getting.

Upon OS bootup, I get an Error window. Clear Outline, it says Error on the top left. Most of the error box it white, followed below by a grey area. In that grey area, to the right, there is a button to press, called OK.  In the white part, there is a yellow colored triangle with a white Exclamation Point. The error message reads:   Error accessing the system registry.

After I press the OK button to continue, another error message pops up. This time, with a red circle and a white X in the middle of it. The error message reads ( verbatim ):     Unexpected error; quitting.         I press the OK button, and the OS operates normally, at least that I know of.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista/7), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista/7).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

OK...I did what you said. The error messages disappeared, but now I have a new error window that pops up. The error window is entitled EPUHelp. In the window, it says: EPUHelp has stopped working.   Then it says: Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.    Then, it gives you two options to press:   ( green arrow ) : Check online for a solution and close the program    or  ( green arrow ): Close the program.

At the bottom of the error window, it gives you a thing to click on that says: view problem details. I clicked on it, and below I have copied and pasted what it says:

When I click on check online to find a solution, it disappears. I will reboot to see fi anything happened, but I doubt it. I will reply what happens in a few minutes.

Yup, same error, the EPUHelp error. I click on Check Online, it runs like it's searching online, then disappears.

Go back to "msconfig" and reverse all changes.

That was for testing purposes only.

Let's employ more advanced tools..

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
