Hey guys, I've just started having a problem with my desktop computer in the last couple of days. When I turn it on, it seems to load properly, but explorer.exe crashes, leaving me with a black screen. I was able to restore a previous version fine, but as soon as my computer went to sleep/shut down, the problem returned. The computer starts fine in safemode.

So far I have tried

Clean Boot

sfc/scannow

Checked my shell in the winlogon in Registry Editor

Scanned for viruses

So far, the problem persists. I can't think of any recent changes/installs that would have been the cause? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmm...can you try running the Speccy, with new link?

I might guess that your CPU is overheating...but I'd rather look at reflected temps via the snapshot.

I keep getting an error that reads

'CPU dll init failed (error 2!) Some information will not be displayed'

OK, let's see if you can check your temperatures using software.

SpeedFan

Post the screenshot for the main screen results, please...do not necessarily assume that the temp marked "CPU" is the one for the CPU (it never has been on my systems).

I've tried to install it several times, but I keep getting

'error <SPEEDFAN Driver Not Installed>

Is Speedfan driver started?'

I googled for another program and installed Argus Monitor, but it gave me

'error failed to load driver'

message for every scan option?

Hello! Wondering . Can you install these programs in safe mode with net working?? Just a thought!! It's not making sense to me that you aren't able to install these free software programs. What did you use to scan for viruses?? What are you using for anti- virus protection? Explorer. exe could be a virus.

Whenever Windows starts, explorer.exe will be called. It is the feature that makes the process a target by virus makers who takes advantage of it ...

PS These are my thoughts!

I'm in safemode with networking atm, no luck. I use avast to scan my computer, and it's normally really good (or so I found?) at picking up anything.

Hello! I recommend using Malwarebytes free , ESET on line scanner and Awd cleaner If these do not help you with your issue, you should start a topic in the malware section.

Do you need links to these? The BC forum has a excellent team that can help you with malware! I would recommend you post there if this topic is not moved there by the BC staff.

donetao!

PS There is no program that will pick up every thing. The internet has become a cesspool and you need several tools to keep you safe. I do pretty good with MSE, MBAM, and WOT. I also have a back up image of my OS on a external HD that I know is malware free. I have other things also, but that is a different topic.

I hope this helps you with your issue.

PS2 This is not my first rodeo. I hope I have helped you with your issue.

PS3 I see you are on line at the moment, but I'm very tired and may not be around much longer.

- Run Tweaking's Windows Repair All In One and make sure you (at least) tick the box "Repair WMI". WMI is used to pull up A LOT OF info from your system. It will resolve the "Cannot initialize SPC dll" problem.

The program can repair A LOT OF (not all) problems on your system. If you run all the options then the entire program should finish in about 30 minutes.

- Enable the "Server" service.

- Enable the AVAST antivirus. Speccy says it's disabled.

I ran the recommended programs, but none of them identified any errors. However, I am now able to run speedfan (though speccy issue continues)

Max operating temp for your CPU is 72 Celsius...looks to me like your system is overheating, as suggested by described symptoms, IMO.

So what does that mean I should do? Does it require fixing, or just turned off more frequently? Sorry, I'm very inexperienced

ETA: I left the computer turned off all day. I entered the ASUS BIOS settings and the CPU temp read 28C, while the Speedfan test I ran immediately after is still reading 82C? Since none of the programs can identify any sort of virus, would I be best simply doing a factory reset of some kind? Or do you guys think the BIOS reading is wrong?

Press CTRL+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select "Show processes of all users", and select "Processes". Click on the column CPU/Processor to sort the processes on the amount of CPU usage. One of those processes should use A LOT OF CPU time.
