I am going to college is the fall for Information Assurance. My laptop(what i am on now) is slow and cluttered and is running windows 7 32bit. I am told that Linux is better for what i am going for and I will have to learn linux systems at some point i am sure.

Should i make the switch and if so what distro do you suggest? or is it still better to just clean up this windows machine? I am looking at Fedora (at the moment) for if i do switch...

Thanks to all that reply

Kyle

Hey there Kyle.

Wanted to throw in my 2 cents regarding you thinking about trying Fedora as a possible alternative to Windows.

I just recently made my desktop a dual-boot with Windows 7 on one side and Fedora 19 on the other. My workplace is headed to using that flavor of Linux so I though I would try it out. I am not impressed by it and am not a fan.

I do like playing around with various distros and in the past couple of years have played around (via Live CD's) with OS4, Puppy, Ubuntu and Mint (the last two are in a VM on my desktop).

The upside to a dual-boot is that while you're away at school, if there is anything you need to work on (applications and/or programs) that will only run on a Windows machine, you've still got access to it and for all other stuff you can play, surf and run and learn on what ever distro you decide on.

I've got the link to what directions I followed as well as my posts, if you're interested in reading them, otherwise, the Linux/Unix link that OldPhil posted is a great place to start. That's the Forum where I've been lurking about for some time now.

Hope that helps and good luck with school.

thanks for the replies,

The reason i picked fedora(for the most part) is because i will be doing perl programming as part of the degree. I have read that fedora was the best for this...  so do you also suggest dual boot instead of just replacing Win7?

Edit:: The linux quiz from the link provided earlier showed that OpenSuse was my best option....

Thanks,

Hey there Kyle. I'm not really qualified to tell you what should be removed from the list you gave, I'll have to leave that up to some other member.

Two other points I wanted to make:

1) yes, I really would strongly suggest a dual boot if you are able to do it, again mostly because you would then have access to two different Operating Systems while you're at school.

2) You mentioned in your OP that your machine was running slow.

Perhaps you should so some house cleaning - seeing what is starting at Start Up, what you can safely keep from doing that and, of course, post the actual specs of your laptop - make, model, how much ram - to see if any of that can be worked on.

Again, best of luck to you and with school.

Thanks for the advise about the dual boot

As far as the house cleaning software i do use Ccleaner in an attempt to keep things tidy. I think there is just too much on it. i do know that some stuff has yet to be "completely" removed. even after uninstalling...
