My boss's computer runs sluggishly and I suspect something bad is hidden on the hard drive.
It appears he was running with an expired Norton Anti-Virus program. I uploaded Trend Micro PC-cillin and have him on that now, but we are plagued with the ghost of Norton past. Our IT guy tried everything short of standing on his head to remove all traces of Norton, but it keeps coming back in odd places, like on the address bar of the search browser. Can you suggest how to remove it and kill it?

Anyhow here's the HJT log after doing Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Windows Defender, and Spyware Guard. I also ran Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner and it comes up clean. Please help. This is critical.

We have a Buffalo LinkStation File Server (all the better to share things) and he has no personal firewall. Trend Micro has a firewall built in and it is now activated. Shutting the barn door after the horse is out.... The boss likes to surf and thank goodness at least we have him on Firefox.

With grateful thanks from Pittsburgh,
Batya

Hello batya7 in Pittsburg

Good news there is no malware in the log. Norton is not running as a service, so there is no conflict. There is no bad news, so let's see if we can't get rid of your leftovers.

You'll have to disable any real time protection you have going, like Tea Timer, or they might not allow the changes that need to be made.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Navigate to your Program Files and delete Norton SystemWorks,Norton AntiVirus, or anything to do with Norton or Symantec.

Reboot your computer.

Let me know if that did it, and post a new HijackThis log to make sure all the entries are gone.

Thanks,
tea
