Yesterday I downloaded an email: USPS Notification with the header: Delivery Status Notification... As I am expecting a parcel delivery I opened it. It read: Our courier couldn't make the delivery of the parcel to you etc... and suggested I print a Shipping Label. The instructions included the name of my local post office! I am aware that I shouldn't run any file from an email, and so I checked the .exe file with AVG and it came up clean of any virus. I ran the .exe file. Nothing happened.

Still unsure, I then checked Google for any reference to scam emails from USPS and found a number, all pointing to a virus as a payload.

* I ran a full computer scan on AVG. It came up clean.

* I downloaded Microsoft Safety Scanner ESRT.exe and ran a full computer scan. Again, it came up clean.

I submitted the email and attachment to both McAfee and AVG. McAfee responded with an inconclusive result.

* I ran a third full computer scan with AVG, this time checking the radio button for 'rootkits'. I left the scan to run overnight.

* AVG required a re-boot, and on rebooting the program picked up IDP.TROJAN.E13F31C, and removed it.

* I ran a fourth full computer scan using AVG and it picked up TROJAN HORSE INJECT2.AEVN in the original email. It removed the Trojan.

From my reading, it appears that these viruses/trojans are hard to remove. My question is this: Am I still infected? My computer seems to be running slightly slower,  but that might just be a nervous perception issue. Start-up is also very slow.

I am running:

- Windows 7 Professional version 6.1 (Build 7601 Service Pack 1) 64-bit on

- Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2,20GHZ

- I keep all security updated on Windows and AVG.

- I am running AVG Internet Security through my ISP.

- AVG Version 2013.0.3469

- Virus Database version 3722/7495 (14 May 2014, 18:54)

- I am using Microsoft Outlook with with AVG Personal email scanner

I have downloaded and run DDS and do have a DDS.txt file and attach.txt file available. I understand I shouldn't post those in this area.

Thanks, everyone. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Broni,

As far as I can see that's all the tests and scans.

I hope I have followed your instructions to the letter. (I struggled a bit on the Rkill, as I couldn't find a .log file so I sent the .txt files)

Seriously, thanks for taking the time to help me.
