Hello everybody,

I'm not asking for help at this point, this is all meant to be an introduction.

I took programming classes back in 1989 and 1990, all DOS based, and received a certificate of achievement in computer programming. It's pretty obsolete at this point. I work as a tutor at the community college I attended. I have a moderate understanding of computers, but little knowledge of Windows.

I'm sick of being infected by malware and adware and viruses and whatever else they're called. I found this community through mvps.org which I found while trying to find a cure for my sadly infected computer. I've been a careless and uninformed user, and my next goal is to learn more about Windows XP and how to keep my machine safe, and how to recognize infection and remove it. I learned about the hosts file, and implemented one I found through a site at mvps.org. I can briefly see a browser window open when I launch explorer, but now it says "site can not be found." I'm hoping that's preventing the bad guys from getting any more information from me. My next goal is to find how their code is launching and get it removed from my computer.

Now I'm off to find the tutorial on how programs are started in Windows XP.
