I am using an ASUS CG5270 with Windows Vista.  I bought it from a Best Buy a few years back and haven't changed any of the parts in it, so as far as I can tell these specs match what I have: http://www.cnet.com/products/asus-essentio-cg5270-bp003/specs/ .

About a week and a half ago I started experiencing primary disc failures on start up.  After restarting it several times, I was finally able to access my desktop and back everything up to an external HDD.  After that I switched which slot in the motherboard my HDD was plugged into and my computer hasn't given me a message about primary disc failure since then.  I have a new problem now though.  Whenever I start up the computer the Realtek High Definition Audio driver doesn't start up properly and my computer is completely silent.  I have found though that if I turn on my computer, let it boot up completely, and then restart it the Realtek driver will load properly and my sound will work fine.  I tried deleting and reinstalling the driver, but this didn't change anything.  Is there a way that I can get my sound to work every time I start up my computer instead of every other time?

Hi,

Are your operating system, security program and audio drivers all current? My Realtek audio driver is dated 3/20./2014

I think I might have fixed it.  I used Revo Unistaller to delete Realtek and then reinstalled it again.  I've turned my computer off and on 3 or 4 times now, and every time I do the sound works fine.

When I started my computer back up today the sound problem returned.  I'll post back this afternoon with the information you asked for.

In my Device Manager, the Driver Date for Realtek High Definition Audio is listed as 7/6/2009.

Hi,

Check the Realtek site and see if there isn't a newer driver for your audio chip set

All right.  I'm now up to 5/6/2014.  I've rebooted twice and haven't had a problem with sound yet.

The problem's still there today.  I had to reboot it twice to get the sound to work even.

Oh, I've also noticed that with the newer version of Realtek I can no longer access the Sound Manager.  When I plug in headphones a message bubble will appear saying I plugged something into my audio jack, but sound doesn't come through the headphones and it doesn't mute my speakers.

Hi,

I'm beginning to think that there's another problem. Your drivers are current but your not getting the results that I'd expect if all was well.

I'm assuming that you checked to make sure that the new drivers that you downloaded and installed were the correct ones for your system. Have you run CHKDSK /R from the command prompt to make sure that the HDD isn't causing some of these problems?

Just to add, a Realtek driver for your ASUS desktop model is found here.

I ran the chkdsk scan.  It says it didn't find any problems.  Here is the text from Wininit in the Event Viewer.  I don't really know how to interpret it myself, but maybe you'll see something important.

OK, I installed the driver from jhayz's link and I've got the Sound Manager and headphone support back.  Sorry, I had gone to Realtek's website instead of Asus's when I went to download the new one.  I didn't know.
