Hello-

Each time I close out of XP, after going to the start button and give the command to "Turn off the Computer" the blue screen tells me that the system is going through, let's say, 8 updates.  The system will then start to, I assume, load the updates (1 of 8 completed, 2 of 8 completed, 3 of 8 completed...) and will eventually close after what can be up to 10 minutes.

Not sure what I have done, but I would hope there is an easy solution.

Thank you!

If you recently reinstalled Windows XP, I think this is probably automatic updates installing the 100+ updates for the OS.   If you were to use the download client with updates set to preview rather than automatic, they will actually install at one time.  Automatic updates takes its time installing them on shut down a little bit at a time.

Updates do take some time to finish it seems like sometimes compared to their size...

2 Drive c: () (Fixed) (Total:298.08 GB) (Free:14.17 GB) NTFS

Above reflects insufficient free space on C: partition...standard equation for XP is 15% of total partition space.  Insufficient free space seems to produce unwanted situations for users.

Please uninstall MSE.  As stated, it is no longer supported and is useless.  Additionally, you have Avast installed and having a defunct AV program installed can do no good whatever.

Turn off auto-update function for XP, please.  If you require updates, you can manually go to the Windows Update site.

I would also remove Spybot and replace it with SUPERAntiSpyware...Spybot is not what it used to be.

Your CPU is running in the danger range, IMO.  Max operating temperature range is given as 55-74 Celsius.  I suggest that you consider replacing the thermal grease and cleaning the inside of the system.

You are running a very outdated and vulnerable version of IE.  I suggest that you either use a different, current browser, especially since there are no additional security updates for IE forthcoming.

One of your other drives is in trouble, in danger range for temp and reflects a warning status per Speccy and SMART.  This is the 74GB partition.

Thank you very much for your comments and time.

We are going to replace this system at some point in the near future and will only use this computer off line. I have been trying to reduce the amount of data on the c drive, but need more time.

I have backed up the 74 gb drive--maybe we should remove the drive?

We don't use IE--we use Chrome and Firefox.  Should we update IE anyway?

Will look to clean the inside of the system and replace thermal grease.

After completing the above, I may have additional questions if that is ok with you.

Thank you again!  JcbsDa

Whether you use IE or not is immaterial, IMO.

Since IE is a basic component of Windows...and cannot be removed...it is an open door to system vulnerability exploits whether you use it or not.  All critical/security updates pertaining to XP should be installed if one wants to continue to use XP with any modicum of protection for the system.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx

Download it, install it...then manually go to Windows Update for all critical/security updates that are reflected...and install same.

Thank you very much for your help Louis!  It is very much appreciated! The updates, obviously, have stopped and I have gone above 25% availability on the C:drive.
