Ok, I give up and I need help.  I've re-imaged all machines multiple times taking care not to run any network executables prior to this problem but I can't seem to shake it.

Symptoms:

I hear a phone dialer at random times through the speakers.  Network will disconnect randomly and reconnect.

It has to do with anything chrome related (including Opera which is chromium open source).  That I can testify to.  It also appears to require Adobe flash installation.  Without these two installs, I never hear the audio or appear to have the dialer sounds.

Because of this infection earlier this year, I just reimaged and started using IE (although I hate IE).  The recent zero day exploit announcement required me to try another browser so I tried Opera and immediately after, the dialer sounds showed up again.

I would REALLY like to get rid of whatever is causing these sounds.  It seems to be similar to the random radio sounds.  While I have never had any radio advertisements, I have heard random voices coming through the speakers which freaked me out a bit.  I think they said "test".

Obviously very concerned about a network security breach and possible identity theft.   Would like to identify what is causing the problem to understand the extent of the possible security issue.  I've run everything under the sun and nothing is catching whatever is causing the phone dialer sound from the speakers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello dsm185s

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.
.

I would like you to run this program for me.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
.

I would also like to get some extra information on one of the files on the computer

Run FRST like you did before and Type the following in the edit box after "Search:".

rpcss.dll

It then should look like:

Search: rpcss.dll

Click Search button and post the log (Search.txt) it makes to your reply.

I also wanted to communicate a few things that might help.  You will see magic jack and PIA or Private internet access.  The issue I am having precedes PIA which is a VPN service that we use.  VPN's can be quite helpful in that if you do get a virus it makes it much harder for the offender to see or communicate with your computer.  When this first started happening months ago, I thought it was magic jack until we had the exact same thing happening on another computer which did not have it.  For the record the other computer will start making dialing sounds if it has chrome or any open source chromium on it.  I also reimaged these machines multiple times and took great care not to use any network executables to reinstall in case they were infected.  Whatever type of virus it is seems to be very hard to get rid of and I'm very disappointed that nothing has caught it.

Hello dsm185s

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Nothing was found with either of those scans so I'm pretty sure the virus is still there.  This virus is stealthy.  The problems are intermittent and it could take a couple days before I know for sure if the problem is gone.  I uninstalled Opera prior to submitting the original ticket but I know that will bring back the dialer sounds if it's installed.  I can reinstall it if you prefer and I should know if the problem is still there within 48 hours.  Not sure if the virus is still able to run without google chrome or chromium open source installed (Opera) - I'm guessing it hijacks these browsers.  The dialer sound only appears if one of those browsers is present.  I will also know if we still have a problem when the network becomes intermittent as it appears to do something with the network adaptor.  Sometimes I will see a command prompt or shell open in the task manager when I don't have anything open and that was the case just before I ran AdwCleaner.

Regarding the network adapter, I remember seeing an error in the event log that said something about the master browser settings.  This really confused me because when I looked it up , it seemed to be something related to multiple enabled nics, which none of the computers that showed symptoms of this virus have.

To sum up this virus can only be identified via the following:

Dialer sound (and sometimes people talking) when Opera or Google Chrome is installed with Adobe flash (browser does not have to be loaded). - usually happens once a day.

Network disconnect/reconnect.  - can happen several times a day.

Command Prompt or Shell open but not visible in task bar.  Only visible in task manager - Hit and miss with this one.  Not sure how often it occurs.

Master Browser error in the event log - I think this error is related to "WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service" which I disabled prior to opening the ticket.  Dialer sounds persisted after that though.

The easiest way to know for sure is to reinstall Opera and see if the dialer sounds return.  Let me know if you want me to do that.

Hello dsm185s

I would like you to set the router's DNS settings to point to open DNS.

You can see how to this here. - https://store.opendns.com/setup/router/

Just pick which router you are using and follow the instructions listed using the settings that they provide

Then reinstall chrome and see if it comes back

I installed Opera and Adobe flash which should reproduce the dialer sound if the virus is still present.  I haven't heard it yet.  Open DNS was configured, tested, and is active.

This morning, I DID see the mysterious conhost I mentioned as one of the ways to identify if the virus is present.  This is what I gathered using Process Explorer.  The following would be the main process and the tree below it.  The child process is VERY suspicious to me.  I promptly killed these processes after gathering the information.  I can kill the conhost without any problems.  If I kill crss.exe which is the main process, I get a blue screen (may be normal, I don't know).

Path: (Main Process)

C:\Windows\System32\csrss.exe

Commandline:

%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,20480,768 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ServerDll=sxssrv,4 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Path: (Child process)

C:\Windows\System32\conhost.exe

Commandline:

\??\C:\Windows\system32\conhost.exe "18538865301484243738679424553-740383941883369631-8984618101560744635-368525186

Just got the dialer sound through the speakers.  Open dns didn't make a difference.

Just experienced our first network disconnect/reconnect of the day.  It was isolated to this computer.

Had the dialer sound through the speakers for the second time today (four tones).  I saw the following load immediately after in the Process Explorer.  Not sure if this is normal or not.

Commandline:

C:\Windows\System32\SearchProtocolHost.exe

Path:

"C:\Windows\system32\SearchProtocolHost.exe" Global\UsGthrFltPipeMssGthrPipe19_ Global\UsGthrCtrlFltPipeMssGthrPipe19 1 -2147483646 "Software\Microsoft\Windows Search" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT; MS Search 4.0 Robot)" "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Temp\usgthrsvc" "DownLevelDaemon"

Commandline:

C:\Windows\System32\SearchFilterHost.exe

Path:

"C:\Windows\system32\SearchFilterHost.exe" 0 516 520 528 65536 524

I also noticed conhost.exe running again.  Killed it again.

Hello dsm185s

Conhost in that location is legit

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?
