Posted 22 May 2006 - 11:24 PM

my computer has been running extremely slow, it has happened in the past and a reformat fixes it, however it always comes back. system restore to an earlier date worked about 2-3 times to fix the problem but eventually became useless. i have run the following programs: ad-aware, spybot s&d, mcafee virusscan, and windows defender. all of these programs are up to date, but have found nothing to fix the problem.

the computer runs slow for the most part, but struggles the most when starting programs etc. even the windows startup sound skips. when running in safe mode everything runs smooth with no delay.

i own a dell dimension 2400 running XP, 1 gig of ram and 2.39 celeron processor.

thanks in advance for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

this is the most current log, done just a minute ago.

i went through all the steps before posting this log and also ran mcafee stinger, as i had not before. however nothing shows in that program either. also, when i disabled all startup items via msconfig the problem was still there, i failed to mention that in the previous post. thanks again!

To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  • Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  • Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  • Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  • The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  • Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)]
Then Download and Save blacklite to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
leave [X]scan through windows explorer checked,
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there... like "wbemtest.exe"
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste this log along with the rootkit revealer log.

Sorry .. for some reason I did not get the notification that you replied.

* Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start GMER.exe
Click the rootkit-tab and click scan.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.
This tools works in safe mode.. other rootkitrevealers don't.

ok i was able to get gmer running after having some problems. i had to disable scanning of devices because i do not have a floppy drive and it would freeze everytime trying to scan it. also i did run into about 2-3 critical system errors where it blue screened in safe mode and regular startup and made me shutdown. however, i was able to run it on normal startup and in safe mode and got the same results. before running gmer i ran stinger, ad-aware, windows defender, and spybot s&d again. s&d and ad-aware only came up with a few tracking cookies that i removed.

here are the once again small results from the scan...(safe mode and normal mode returned same results)

GMER 1.0.10.10122 - http://www.gmer.net
Rootkit 2006-06-14 15:00:42
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2

---- Files - GMER 1.0.10 ----

File C:\System Volume Information\MountPointManagerRemoteDatabase
File C:\System Volume Information\tracking.log
File C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.10 ----

also, in the past day my computer has started to freeze about every 2 minutes or so for about 7-10 seconds...the mouse and everything on the screen freezes but then unfreezes after that period and things return to normal. as i am typing this i have not run into it, so it is possible my scans removed the problem. just wanted to add this incase it helped.

Still not seeing any problems...

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

didn't take too long to run the scan, under 5 min in safe mode

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Still nothing...you should not be affected by the GDI vulnerability if you have all your updates at http://www.windowsupdate.com.

yeah i have all the updates. this is crazy though, any idea what it might be? it runs fine after a reformat then after a couple weeks starts running slow 24/7. it wasn't like it began after installing certain software either. like i said before, now its even freezing completely every 2 minutes or so for several seconds. (it started again) any settings i could look at to see what is causing this to run so slow? for example what processes are taking up the most memory etc? thanks a lot for your help.

Have you examined the event log to see if there are any ide/hard driver errors?

hmm ok, there are several errors in the event log under system.

the ones under application and security do not seem to be related to my problem.

atapi and cd rom have come up a few hundred times today alone. and they go down to the bottom of the event log till june 11th, seems to be happening every 2-3 minutes according to the log. hopefully this is the issue...i have a screenshot but i cant get my ftp to connect, not sure why...

let me know if you need any additional info or if i should check somewhere else.

here are the errors:
