can I do a fresh install?

A fresh install to me means a format and reinstall from DVD.

I do not use Windows at all.

You may have a recovery partition on that HDD or if you cloned the HDD to SSD it may be on the SSd also, no idea.

You may be able to run system refresh ( Factory restore) from Win8, again not sure.

I will leave that for the Windowsites.

Its prob best to get a Windows 8 ISO from M$ and burn it to DVD, Just in case you ever need it.

EDIT:

If your pc is running fine there is no need for a clean install, Remember, If it aint broke. Dont fix it.

And remember, You do not defrag a SSD, Turn the defrag in Windows OFF.

As far as I know, Windows 8/8.1 makes it impossible to defrag an SSD, but yes, I understand.

Yep, I am amazed by the performance of this 840 EVO without the HDD plugged in. I'm not sure about Linux. None of my software would work.

The product key for Windows 8/8.1 is embedded in the in the BIOS.  You will have to use a program like RWEverything to retrieve it.

If you are going to use the hdd for storage you do not want to install Windows on it.

You can find a tutorial for Darik's Boot and Nuke here.

I never could get DBAN to recognize the HDD, so I tried gparted. It made the SSD work, but I don't what has happened to my HDD. Windows doesn't even recognize it anymore. What have I done?
