Yesterday, I started up my Windows 7 system and it stopped loading and was stuck at the Windows logo screen. It was stuck for about 20 minutes, so I tried to start it in safe mode. Safe Mode wouldn't load because it got stuck at a file called asw.RVrt.sys. I tried to use the Windows recovery console, but it wouldn't load either. One of my son's friends looked at it for me and he was able to get it to load up. He removed my Avast antivirus because he said it was causing the problem with Safe Mode. Now, I can get into safe mode, but if I try normal mode, I get blue screens or the computer automatically restarts. Safe Mode with networking runs ok, but I can't reinstall my virus scanner and none of my other malware scanners like Malwarebytes will run. If I try to download any scanners, the computer locks up and restarts. I read on the Malwarebytes forum to rename Malwarebytes and run it then, but that won't work, either. I also can't use Chrome or Firefox, which I both use regularly, because they lock up or cause a blue screen. One of the times the computer locked up, when it restarted it offered to let Windows fix a startup issue, so I let it. But it said it couldn't be fixed. So now I'm stuck with a computer that only works in Safe Mode, which seems to be fairly stable so far, no virus protection of any kind, and only IE working as a web browser. Also, when my computer restarts, the hard drive doesn't show up, even in the BIOS- I have to turn off the button on the power supply and then start it for my hard drive to come back. I don't know what happened because the night before I had the problem, everything was fine, I shut down the system normally, and then the next day it just wouldn't load. My computer is Windows 7 64-bit, with an AMD FX 8350 processor, 16 gigs of RAM. If anyone could help me with this, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

ETA: It doesn't last in Safe Mode for long and it just locks up and restarts after about 15-20 minutes. When it restarts, my hard drive doesn't show up and I have to turn the computer off at the back before it does. Also, I'm sorry about the topic heading- I read about making it descriptive after I had already posted and I can't seem to edit that.

Hello -

Basically, without seeing your system, you have Avast Antivirus installed and this has "Jammed" your start-up.

Or you had Avast installed, and during the removal the problems started -

In this area we generally do not perform the "brain surgery" required to reboot the system, but I will see if there is someone on-line at the moment that can give the system a quick boot.

Please hang there for half an hour while I see if I can find someone, or we will need to transfer it to Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum.

>> none of my other malware scanners like Malwarebytes will run << If you have Malwarebytes already installed, we can run that.

Go - Start Orb > Programs > Malwarebytes and there should be an extra > that leads to Tools & Malwarebytes Chameleon.

Click on that if you can, or tell me the result if you try ......

Wow, that got it to update, which I haven't been able to do. My computer locked and restarted so I had to do it again and now there's a black box and it says "Killing known malicious processes, please wait". The interesting thing is that when it restarted, it went to just regular Windows- not safe mode, which it hasn't done since the guy removed Avast and it became a mess. So right now there's that black box with that message and a blinking cursor under it. Hopefully that's good? Oh, or should I have gone back to Safe Mode?

ETA Now it started Malwarebytes like usual and it's scanning.

Give that about another ~15 or so minutes, and see what happens, then reboot it.

I currently have a call out if you are not able to boot it -

Ok, Malwarebytes scanned and didn't find any malicious objects. (Thanks!) I rebooted and it loaded into regular mode but it took a long time from the Windows logo and the password page. Then, after I put in my password, it went to a black screen for a good 5 minutes or so. When the desktop loaded, I went to open IE to come back here and the computer locked up and restarted. It went back to offering Safe Mode or Fixing startup problems. (which I already tried) So now I'm back in safe Mode with networking.

Hi, lets first have a look at the stop code.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

regards, Elise

Lets see if we can find any cause for this issue.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
