My HP laptop seems to get worse and worse. Norton antivirus never finds anything wrong other than tracking cookies. I just downloaded Malwarebytes and that didnt find anything.

It always seems like there are alot of processes running in Task Manager. Including currently (12) svchost.exe.

I use windows media center to watch movies and certain times, including the present time, it is very slow and unresponsive to the point I need to Reboot Windows. The laptop just runs slow and inefficiently most of the time, including running hot and CPU fan going full speed until I find whatever may be hogging the Processor and shut it down.

I haven't ran windows update in a while because I hate most updates and software changes, etc. I will update as a last resort but I'd rather fix it without having to update.

SPECs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

HP Pavillion dv6 Notebook

Intel M330 2.3GHZ cpu

8GB RAM

229GB Free of 500GB HD

Thanks!

Hello, and Welcome -

There should usually be Several versions of svchost.exe <= see here, but most people only look if they have a problem.

The chances are 95% that there is another problem, so we will look for that -

Download all programs to Desktop, Copy and Paste all logs, and if needed Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus

First -
Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Next -
Download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
• Flush DNS
• Report IE Proxy Settings
• Reset IE Proxy Settings
• Report FF Proxy Settings
• Reset FF Proxy Settings
• List content of Hosts
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Now a quick look to see if antthing can be cleaned in a hurry -
First -
Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Important : Do not reboot until the next program has finished.

Next  -
Now: Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
NOTE : Please close or save all work, as the computer will be Rebooted
Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button. (only once)
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.
Next: Click on the Clean button (only once) to remove the selected items.
You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be close so that the infections can be removed.
Click on OK, and then OK again to confirm the reboot.
When cleaning process is complete a log (AdwCleaner[S0].txt ) of what was removed will be on your desktop.
Please copy and the paste this log in your next post.

A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

If you do not have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed, please see below, if you do, please be sure to Check for Updates.

Then follow with a scan to see if anything is found.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version 1.75.0.1300 has now been upgraded to Version 2.0.1

Please follow Free version removal methods. (link is to Malwarebytes site) if required -

* Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and save it to your desktop
* Double click the desktop icon, click Run, then OK
* Click Next
* Select I accept the agreement then continue to click Next then finally click Install
** Uncheck Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium if you do not want the free trial of the paid version, then click Finish
* If you are notified the Database is out of date click Update Now
* Click Scan Now >>
----------
** Note: If Malwarebytes will not launch please do the following to launch Malwarebytes Chameleon:
* Click Start (Start, Search, All files and folders for Windows XP) then type mbam
* Double click one of the four following files (if one does not work try the next one, and so on) - A black command window will open. Follow those instructions until the Malwarebytes program starts the scan

mbam-chameleon.scr
mbam-chameleon
mbam-chameleon.exe
mbam-chameleon.com
----------
** When completed click the down arrow on Export Log and select Text file (*.txt)
* Save the file to your desktop as MBAM
* Click Apply Actions then restart your computer if requested
* Copy and past the contents of MBAM.txt in your reply

OK -
We need to start with the fact that your Operating System is Out of date.

I haven't ran windows update in a while because I hate most updates and software changes, etc. I will update as a last resort but I'd rather fix it without having to update.

You do need Windows 7.1 so that you will be able to update everything else ......

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) was announced on March 18, 2010, and released in July 2010. The fact that it is not updated is one of your problems, as normal programs must be updated

There are several Errors like >> The program wmplayer.exe version 12.0.7600.16667 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.<< Where Windows Media Player was closed, and it may be because you are running older versions of the program, and not current versions.

The items in AdwCleaner can all be removed (Clean) as there is a way to reinstall if needed.

Chances are that Norton 360 is not Operating and correctly Updating as it should. You do not seem happy with it, but all of these programs do need regular updates.

So I would Uninstall it (or at the very least Disable it), and Re-install it as you do your required Windows Updates.

To update Adobe Reader, only use the genuine site => Adobe Reader 11.0.0.6

Do not accept any extras or Add-ons with the download, and Uninstall all old versions from Programs and Features.

.

Update Java from HERE if you wish to, and Uninstall all other versions from Programs and Features.

Again, untick the free Google Chrome offer as it is not related to the download.

Also when I use one of my other laptops it will only have about 4 processes at startup while mine has average of 75 processes at startup. That just seems really high to me.

It now isnt recognizing my external hard drive. It still shows about the same used space. I just cant see the files until I unplug it a few times. but then after a restart they disappear again.

Thanks!

Wonderful -

You may now find that there are several Updates still waiting for SP1 (unless you covered them).

There is no need to install "Optional Updates" as many include extras that you will not need.

To update Adobe Reader, only use the genuine site => Adobe Reader 11.0.0.6

How is the system running, or are the problems the same ??

Yes. I kept checking for updates after each update until it said I was up to date.

Problems are worse. I can't get online now. Explorer crashes, system is pretty unresponsive. This is why I don't update.

Documents folder now opened after a few minutes. Network is still unresponsive. I'm posting from my phone.

Now I'm back online. Seems to run a little bitter faster when there aren't any problems. But seems more problematic now. Definitely not good! lol

Sounds just a bit better -

>> mine has average of 75 processes at startup.<< Can you identify some of the Start up programs by reading my link above ??

Please do not click on any advertising on the linked pages below. Just read the articles.

Several of the extensions were removed in the AdwCleaner program, but there must be more unwanted items there.

I will go over each one you posted to find exactly what they were -

To clean up Extensions -

1. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel or Programs and Features if using Vista/Windows 7/8. From within Add/Remove Programs look for anything and select Remove.

2. Open your browser and disable (uncheck) all extensions. Make a list, then one by one, re-enable each extension to see if the problems start appearing again with that particular extension. Once you identify the responsible extension...permanently remove it but let me know which one it was so I can update our list.
* How to Disable Extensions in Google Chrome - How to Uninstall Extensions in Google Chrome
* How To Disable Individual Plug-ins in Google Chrome <- try only if the above does not work
* How to Disable Extensions and Plugins in Firefox - How to Remove Extensions/Uninstall Plugins in Firefox
* How to Disable Extensions in Internet Explorer
* How to Disable Add-ons/Extensions in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome
* How to Disable all add-ons in Firefox, Internet Explorer

3. If the above did not resolve the problem, then create a new browser user profile.
* How to Create a new browser user profile in Google Chrome
* How to Create a new browser user profile in Firefox
* How to Create a new browser user profile in Opera, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome

I do understand that updates often cause some problems, and this is usually when quite a few are done at the same time. Always be sure to reboot (often twice) after you do these.

If your computer is running (even off line) you can use a USB Flash drive to download most programs, and then run them without internet. Do you have another computer to use or borrow to copy any of these programs ??

I would prefer you to take your time and do all the steps as described.

You have another browser installed (Chrome), is this working at all ??

The program (ESET Scanner) and its Updates can be installed from a Flash Drive.

You will need to follow the directions to Disable your Norton 360 while the scan runs.

When you have time, please run this Online Scan from ESET -

It may take 2 or 3 hours, so please, only do it when you have time to spare.

Scan with ESET Online Scan
1. Please go to HERE to run the online scannner from ESET.
2. Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus while performing the online scan. This is much stronger than your Antivirus, so it is OK to disable your Antivirus.
3. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
4. Click Start
5. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
6. Click Start
7. Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
8. Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

9, Click Scan
10. Wait for the scan to finish.

NOTE : This can take quite a while to download the program and then updates for a first scan. If you have used this earlier, it will run a bit quicker (I hope). It is ideal to run when you do not need the system for a while.
11. If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file....
12. Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

I'm not sure what "links above" you are referring to.

I had already went through the program and features and cleaned up what I could. there's still a bunch of stuff I'm not sure about.

I disabled a few extensions I knew I didn't need or want, like Logmein (I almost never use it), Google toolbar, HP print, etc. stuff I do not use.

The only thing I disabled that I noticed a significant difference was the Norton Identity protection. It's been an annoyance anyway.

Yeah, I'm able to get online fine for the most part and IE seems a little bit faster too. There are just Sporadic problems. At the moment, everything seems descent.

Seems everytime I restart, the pc doesn't recognize my external drive properly and I have to unplug plug back in etc. Also I have to wait about 3 minutes from the time my desktop appears till I can do anything. if I try to open IE during this time, the icon on my quick launch stays frozen in the pressed position. The wireless icon in the system tray will show as searching for networks the whole time. seems to free up once it does. during that time I can't open it either. The first time, which is when I posted from my phone, it took about 5 min.

WMC seems to run buggy at times. It always did though.

I will run that ESET now with Norton disabled.

Thanks

My computer seems to be performing better and CPU hasn't been heating up with the fan going crazy.

My External hard drive, upon further investigating, I noticed after awhile I can see the videos, but cant play any of them in WMC or WMP. I have also found the same problem when I pugged the external drive into another computer, bringing me to the conclusion that the external drive is part, if not all of the problem. But, it did work fine before so I think something may have happened while troubleshooting/fixing the computer.

Thought I'd let you know, if you have any suggestions.

Thanks
