AVG antivirus causing BSOD, can't start Windows Defender

This all started because I couldn't run Windows Update. Please see thread http://http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/526014/cannot-use-windows-update-suspect-virus/

 

Sirawit had me try various fixes but eventually I began having frequent BSODs related to TCP/IP. I tried updating LAN and WiFI drivers, which really didn't help. I disabled AVG and since then haven't had one BSOD. But problem is, my initial issue of not being able to run Windows Update is not solved. Furthermore, I tried to activate Windows Defender in place of AVG and i get a timeout error when I try to start the service. I definitely don't feel comfortable not running anitvirus..
