Hello!

Could you please help me with the following problem I have? It all started going wombo when Zone Alarm (Firewall) asked me questions about allowing or denying Antivir (free version) actions out of the blue. I think I must have answer wrongly at some point... I un-installed Antivir and reinstalled it but the Guard couldn't be activated. On a hunch I did an additional scan with Ewido which found the following:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E4570A9A} -> Adware.CoolWebSearch : Cleaned with backup

I removed it several times but it seems that SpyBot won't let me do that as it comes up with 6 rectangular boxes each with the same following message:

Resident denied the change of 9C1B2B2A-8963-C92B-AF30-4849E-4570A9A (Category Browser Helper Object) based on your black list.

:flowers:

The top box is flashing and I can only get rid of it via Task Manager. After un-installing Antivir I was asked on every start up if I want to allow or deny a change relating to Antivir uninstalling, even though I'd already answer before.

I followed the preparation guide and AdAware and SpyBot didn't find anything, neither did ZoneAlarm AntiVirus (AV) which I am now using after Antivir started playing up (I un-installed it again).

Housecall AV found 3 different Spyware but could only get rid of 2, but not of BHO_SE.66440.

McAfee Stinger didn't find anything.

I am using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Please find below the HijackThis log.

Many thanks in advance!

Greetings,

Morgane

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Hello,

First of all.. Any reason why your windows isn't up to date? You don't have even ServicePack1 installed!
Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems.
Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/network.mspx and update to Service Pack 1. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
When your system is clean afterwards, then update to SP2, because updating to SP2 CAN cause problems as long as you are infected.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Update your Sun Java:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company

Dear Miekiemoes,

I didn't know I had to install a Windows Service Pack. In 2004 a so-called friend got the O/S for me and installed it and by the looks of things he took my money and installed a pirate copy! As you can gather I am NOT an expert, far from it, but I'm learning.

What do I do now? I am a student and definately don't have the money to buy yet another one. If I contact microsoft at the given piracy email address, aren't they likely to prosecute me after all this time? I really thought I had genuine software.

I would appreciate any help you could give me on this.

Many thanks in advance!

Yours shocked and clueless,

Morgane

Hi Morgane,

I am sorry to hear that your so called friend installed a pirate copy and you actually had to pay for that.
It's not your fault - you didn't know.
Because your version is not genuine, you won't be able to update unfortunately... and your system will stay vulnerable.

So skip the step of windows update and perform the rest of my steps. I know already what you can put on your birthdaylist: A genuine version of XP :flowers:

Hello Morgane,

I see a clean log here... Only one file we have to delete, but that one will be hidden, even when hidden files and folders are shown. So to unhide that file, perform next:

Go to start > run and type: regsvr32 /u occache.dll
(or copy and paste this in the field in start > run )
Click Ok

Now search and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf

Go to start > run and type regsvr32 occache.dll
Click OK

Delete the contents of the Killbox-folder:
C:\!KillBox\

Let me know in your next reply how things are.

Dear Miekiemoes,

Thank you for the latest set of instructions! I have deleted the files and the PC is somewhat faster. Before I did that I got a SpyBot pop-up window that said

Browser Helper Object
Value Deleted
{53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F...

The rest of the information couldn't be read as SpyBot's pop-up boxes are always somehow short & squashed together.

I denied the change as I was unsure what it relates to and because it followed a security certificate issue while on Ebay. Was that the right thing to do? The same popped up again about 5 more times.

Please find below the latest HijackThis log.

Again many thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Morgane

Hi Morgane,

Well, that's the problem with teatimer... If you are running any scan or change something yourself and it deletes an entry, you have to allow it in teatimer and don't deny it, because teatimer sees this as an attempt as well, and block the changes being made, and restores the entries as they were before.

So, when you perform a scan again, allow it in teatimer and don't deny it.
