Hi,

Whilst attempting to use the "restore to factory defaults" recovery option as a last ditch effort to resolve a problem with IE9 not updating successfully to IE10 or IE11 (windows 7 64 bit), I foolishly downloaded some software to look in the partitions.... and I think free with that came conduit search and so the machine ground to a very annoying halt.  I believe I have uninstalled the programme, reset all browsers but I think it may well still be lurking hence I'm here....  I'd really appreciate an expert looking through the logs.

Thanks

Good evening. :)

You have titled the thread Conduit search, redirecting browsers, keep getting ads... but in the actual post you say I think it may well still be lurking. Are you saying that you have solved all the problems in the title but would like somebody to take a second look just to be safe or that your PC is suffering from the issues in the title and hence you actually know that something nasty is no your system?

It may seem pedantic of me, but if I spend time looking for something that I "know" to be present but you know it isn't, because you no longer have the symptoms, it won't endear you to me.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Hi Noviciate.

I'm glad you checked as I have inadvertently been a bad person - when I posted my post it told me it had failed to post as the website was unavailable..... at which point I tried a few more things thinking that I had failed to post successfully.  Namely Malwarebytes, adwcleaner and combofix (which I now appreciate that I shouldn't have run).  So, firstly please don't look at the above log.

Secondly, the various things I have tried do appear to have found problems, so are there some steps you can take me through to ensure that I have rid my system of nasties.  I'm also wondering if the reason I have issues with IE updates after IE9 failing, and why restore to factory defaults doesn't appear as an option when I press F8 is due to the MBR being messed up, perhaps by nasties?

Thanks in advance, so glad you checked first!

Pip

I think that the course of action will be decided by the "need" you have to factory restore your PC, assuming that this option can be accessed. If you are going to do that then it is a waste of my time and yours to clean the PC first - a bit like redecorating your house and then having it knocked down.

Assuming that IE is permanently borked, can you live with using another browser, or are you wedded to IE? If you can go with Firefox, Chrome, or any other browser, we then need to look at how bad IE is and whether or not it can be fixed. if it can be repaired, all is well, if not, then we need to look at what is wrong with factory restore and see if it can be fixed.

Over to you.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

So, ideally I wouldn't be doing the restore to factory settings.  The reasons I have resorted to it are a) IE9 repeatedly fails to update - no, I don't often use IE but have to occasionally for testing purposes, B) whenever I try to use Microsoft Lync it fails to startup and gives me no error information of any use and I need to use it. I have failed to find anyway to resolve these issues.

Unfortunately, it seems that in order to restore I need to buy some restore discs despite having a recovery partition.  In the meantime I need to be confident that I'm not at risk of infecting others.  Any ideas?

You may be able to burn your own reinstallation disks if that option is built into your machine - can you tell me the make and model.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks for your help.  It's an Asus u36sg - if they're created now doesn't that mean I could just end up continuing with the same issues? I don't really understand how these things work!

Go to the Windows Start Menu, All Programmes, under 'ASUS' look for AI Recovery or something similar.

Trying that now - does that create a "clean" recovery set?  (saved to external drive as no dvd drive).

Thanks.

I don't know if you can use an external hard drive or not, but on my machine the variation creates reinstallation disks from data stored on the recovery partition.
