I apologise for the verbose post but I assume detail will help. I apologise in advance but I need a fix for my pc and the working time window can be minutes so most was rapidly typed with no thought for editing. spelling or grammar.  Skip to the big problem, if you want, as that is the issue right now.

[BACKGROUND - SKIP IF YOU WISH] ]I have a HP Pavillion dv7 notebook and the OS has been nothing but trouble since I made the mistake of buying the thing in November 2011. As always, sod's law proves itself correct yet again my computer takes the moment I'm broke to start having issues plus I'd rather wait for the next generation of Intel processors are out before buying a new one and hoped Broadwell by the replacement time.

[PROBLEM 1] The dv7, sorry no model number as the "esc + function" trick does nothing, worked perfectly for all of 9 hours, after Windows Update ran it crashed. I'd erased the display account "Kiosk" but it still comes up as the primary account, my account was inaccessable - neither username nor password were accepted but I'd set up fingerprint access and could access my account that way. If I try to add guest or other accounts they don't show up when loading, only in the relevant section of "Control Panel" but "Kiosk" isn't listed there. It is still listed under OS (C:) > Users.

This means that I can't use safe mode, although I haven't needed to until now but is currently an issue. I left it like that as it would make it slightly harder for thieves and the nosy. Also, I planned on adding a SSD drive and I figured there was no point resetting it to factory settings twice, especially after I'd just reinstalled much of my software and essential files. It took longer than expected to buy an SSD but I have one now but haven't gotten around to installation.

Linux distros with repair tools like dealing with forgotten passwords don't work and actually saved me from encrypting the whole drive, just important, private and a lot of random useless files made to look important or important for snoopers. I didn't really care about this issue until I couldn't access safe mode.

[PROBLEM 2 - possibly resolved or perhaps a contributing factor to current issues] About a couple of months ago I downloaded a video off of youtube using either of the Firefox add-ons "Download Helper" or "Youtube Video and Audio Downloader," installed Google's cloud program that must've crashed as I can't find it on my computer, then uploaded the file online so I could rip to mp3 using a website. The mp3 plays fine and without issues. I thought I had a virus as deleting the mp4s was difficult & I accidentally downloaded twice. COM surrogate would suddenly eat all my resouces when starting up and I'd have to end the process if they were clicked on or accessed, it also occurred if any mp4 was opened, the folder they were contained in or certain media players were opened. One copy I made the mistake of sending to recycle bin and explorer would hand and eat my resources until the explorer process had to be terminated. The other copy was removable using Delete Doctor. I finally got rid of the one in Recycle Bin by emptying it indirectly and without opening it.

I assumed I had a virus but MalwareBytes, ESET's online scanner, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, changed to Avast and then ESET's free trial, McAfee security scan plus and AVG's bootable disc say I'm clean. Once the files were deleted the issues stopped but I still won't do online banking on the computer.

[PROBLEM 3 - the serious one]

The initial symptom was loss of sound. The program's sound level just goes to zero. So far it has occurred in both Media Player Classic - Home Cinema x64 and a different error in VLC player that is accompanied by random annoying noises. Following this, on booting there may be unusual beeps. Reinstallation/upgrading software has had no effect. Since initial problems random scrolling to the bottom of the page has started and may be resposible for the loss of sound in MPC. Scrolling may go round and round too rapidly to hit the target.

The second symptom was loss of touchpad control. Since initial writing loss of cursor control has become the initial symptom. In some instances clicking "enter", often after "right clicking," if scrolling has begun, will restore temporary control, if lucky providing enough to save and restart. Usually the combination of rapid scrolling and loss of cursor control means I have to push the power button until it is off. The keyboard also usually stops working at the same time, with the possible exception of "del" and "enter." In fact all control is lost, usually over minutes and often within minutes of booting. The behaviour is very eratic though and may continue to the next boot.

It initially appeared very much like the classic "freeze" - when I left my computer on, an update occurred and it looked frozen with the automatic restart stuck but the logs looked like other programs continued to run but recently the touchpad and keyboard will have stopped working yet I can see running programs contining to function e.g. uploading a file. I've checked for driver updates but they all seem up to date. The devices are all in full working order according to my computer, with the possible exception of the keyboard, which needs a proper clean as a couple of keys stick.

As the hardware will work normally until the problems occur, and everything is listed as working correctly, I can only assume there is either a virus that somehow has evaded every program I've tried or there is something wrong with Windows.

The problem seems to worsen after updates although the initial boot works perfectly for longer and it will boot for a while almost normally..

As a side note I haven't been able to burn a DVD recently but the discs were old, cheap and I've had issues finding one that will burn on other computers. I don't know if this is hardware failure but external DVD burners are cheap enough.

I don't have rescue media at present as the HP rescue media program says the 16GB USB drive is too small, even though it says 13GB is needed. It won't accept the 16GB ones I've tried but a couple could have issues as on insertion Windows asks about formatting them. I have ordered discs, 32gb usb drives and an external dvd writer but I'm still waiting. I'm sure I burned the Windows rescue disc but I can't find it and those dvds don't work anymore, even some of the witten ones. I have a copy of the iso on hard drive but have no idea if USB would work.

It can take several restarts to get Windows running with the touchpad working for more than a few minutes. Each time the computer had to be shut down normally or the problem will recur before all the startup programs are loaded. If the computer shuts down normally it loads normally it will come back working but it could work normally anywhere from minutes to days.

Attempts to fix:

I've done a system scan. Using the command line I entered sfc /scannow but the results were "Verification 100% complete"

Run memory diagnostic with no problems detected

The only issue with hardware is something I noticed in the log - a controller problem with a CD drive. I'm not sure whether it is a virtual or real one though as I've never burned a CD and loaded virtual drive manager software on the day of purchase.

Checked for new drivers and recent changes to them..

Restored to a backup made just before issues were noticed but no luck. The other backups were erased to make space for new ones 6 days before issues were observed.

Boot Issues:

Normally the computer boots quickly but now it takes a lot longer to load. Shutting down is far slower too. It hangs for a while on loading windows. I used to have to wait for the fingerprint scanner to come online but now it may have stopped blinking before I can scan myself in.

The problems may exist on booting - scrolling, keyboard issues and occasionally audio with keyboard presenting as little as minutes after loading.

There have been some odd changes when booting - I have to click enter on Windows 7 even though for now it isn't set up for dual boot but it may be temporarily fixed after an update. With the boot problems I don't want to risk adding any more issues but I have been contemplating creating a partition for a Linux package as a backup measure. Windows has corrupted on me several times before so every file is backed up at least twice.

Sometimes odd noises occur on boot - first beeping as Windows loads and now a loud screaming. Usually I get fed up of the screaming and power off. At which point it may offer me Startup Repair.

Sometimes I get a screen telling me "Windows had been unable to boot" and to choose from repair or launch normally but the highlighted options moved too quickly to pick. If this occurs I press "enter" until it works. When I managed to get into Startup Repair it failed providing no clear info as to why.

Are there ways to fix it or shall I just restore the computer to the factory default? I'm finalising the back up process by removing the files, uninstalling never used software so the system image won't be too big.

Normally, I'm pretty good at fixing basic problems for myself and others but this seems to be acting like it doesn't want to be fixed - HP's rescue media won't write to three separate 16gb drives.

It is time to rip it open I think and determine the issue whether it is Windows, hardware based or if a Bridge spider has nested like the one I found on my Raspberry Pi? Luckily, in that instance, the case was transparent and I noticed the mother before plugging in, so all involved survived, whether spider or computer, despite the nest silk being rather difficult to remove, even off of walls. Bridge spiders breed faster than rabbits, especially indoors where they will breed all year round. They like dark, warm places out of their normal breeding season.

Here's hoping the keyboard issue doesn't stop me from getting into bios, supposedly F10, and altering the boot order so I can run from USB without removing drives.

Thank you for the response. Sorry it took so long to reply but it can take many boots to get Windows running stably. Thankfully I have discovered if I revert to before a Windows update then update I can get a stable system for a while.

Also, my pc had been oddly well behaved since I posted and was hoping to catch the log entries prior to issues twice and compare, normally the amount of time between booting and problems is minutes to an hour or so assuming I make it as far as the login screen and it remains stable long enough to do the update trick.

It may be coincidence but I've noticed using certain programs like Skype, JustCamIt, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema x64 and utorrent for a while may have some influence on whatever is causing the problem because loss of function occurs often while Skype or JustCamIt were being used to talk to someone, even when video isn't used. Also, I can watch videos or play music for hours with VLC or Winamp but have had to stop using Media Player Classic as I'd be lucky to watch a tv show. Unfortunately, as I stated before I deleted my backups, to make space, a few days before I observed the problem as I thought I had a functioning computer. It may take a couple of days but the problems always return.

When I checked Windows' Event Viewer I found a few oddities like a blue screen being listed at a time when the computer was functioning normally. One error that cropped up a lot was a controller issue with a CD drive. This error has been going on for a long time, ever since I installed MagicISO to see if I liked it better than PowerISO, without any observed problems except a noise like the drive was scanning for a disc. I'll remove it and reinstall drivers.

I wanted to post before attempting to trigger a meltdown, in the event I can't load Windows again. I don't have a screen for my Raspberry Pi right now and despite having boxes of legacy parts I somehow don't have a complete working set. Time to search for May Day offers.

Based on temperatures I may need to replace, rather than simply clean the fans. It is very difficult finding the version of the dv7 I have - it is on none of the documentation or the laptop and the method given on a HP forum didn't work. I can only find the product number LS089EA#ABU and serial. I guess I'll have to ask them at their forum but have no intention for buying parts from them when eBay is cheaper.

Anyway:

**** End of log ****

Notes: No alterations to the log have been made. My account is listed as "user" on the computer instead of my name. On the login screen the accounts listed are 'Kiosk', which is the default, 'User' - if this is clicked boxes for both the account name and password appear and 'Fingerprint' - the one that gets me in.
Quite a few programs have been removed, mostly just junk I never used. Also, there are programs like the Tor browser bundle and Media Player Classic that don't install like other programs. Tor hasn't been used during problems.

I'm not criticising but may be useful to tell people that AdwCleaner requires a restart, and "okay" automatically initiates one, as I lost my post and more importantly my other results including the previous MiniToolBox list of system errors that had more interesting errors and was less repetitive.

Almost all of the error found in the MiniToolBox are related to Oracle VM VirtualBox .  Please uninstall this for testing purposes, you can always reinstall it later.

You have Spybot -Search & Destroy installed.  Some years back it was a good tool, even though the Tea Time feature caused all sorts of problems.  There are better programs available, like SUPERAntiSpyware.

Please run the MiniToolBox and post the log.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Apologies - I rambled but don't have time to edit as my computer is experiencing issues again so I just tagged the important stuff ### or for the not quite as important stuff. [] means it can and probably should be skipped.

# I'll run MiniToolBox again after restart, as the log is the same, even when run while I'm experiencing problems, if I can boot into a Windows.[ Problems are currently occurring sporadically, mostly with scrolling but also a clicking sound. This usually means booting is going to be an issue and involve a screaming sound.so I may have to restore to a previous point and have to do everything again. It also means I can't just save and the scrolling prevents moving to an external drive. At least my keyboard works in case i need to enter bios to alter the boot order to run linux from USB and run another virus scan from.]

I've removed VirtualBox and SuperAntiSpyware has been installed. VirtualBox has been installed for over a year before current issues.though.

# Apart from Windows updates only a few programs were installed or updated in the time between the previous restart and the backup I kept. Firefox 28, MalwareBytes 2, Google Auto Backup (no memory of installing, but probably was installed as other Google software auto-updated) Waveshop x64 and Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer,

### However, one of the items won't run - Trusteer Rapport. I tried to remove it using "Uninstall or change a program" but all that happened was a message about "Windows is configuring" so I'm suspicious, especially as it is a program provided by my bank. Hopefully, it just has to be done on restart or if not Delete Doctor can rid me of the current installation. Reinstalling doesn't fix. The rapport.exe just isn't there so I'm going hunting for a virus.
As MiniTool Box puts it, repeatedly:
Error: (05/07/2014 00:35:29 AM) (Source: SideBySide)  (User: )
Description: Activation context generation failed for "1".Error in manifest or policy file "2" on line 3.
Invalid Xml syntax.

Are any of the windows repair tools like "Boot Repair Disc" recommended?

A clicking noise can be an indication of a failing hdd.

To determined how your storage is configured open the Device Manager and click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. This will expand the tree allowing you to see your storage configuration.

If you need to change the configuration you will have to go into the BIOS to make the change.

Please download SeaTool for DOS.

When the SeaTools for DOS website opens click on I Accept, then click on the Download button in step #4.

This download is a ISO image which you will need to burn to a CD in order to create a bootable disc with which to run the diagnostic tests.

To burn this ISO file to a CD or DVD use the instructions below.

Notice:  This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.

1.  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.

2.  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.

3.  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image.

4.  In the image below you will see Dick] burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.

burndiskimage1_zpsb502b181.png

5.  In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.

burndiskimage2_zps17a9d6ff.png

6.  After the image has completed being burned click on Close

Once the disc is created load it in the CD/DVD drive and restart the computer.

Please note:  You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.

Please run the short test and include the results in your next post in this topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

**** End of log ****

The standard boot order in a HP computer, according to their website is 1) Floppy drive 2) Optical drive 3) Hard drive 4) USB device 5) Network adapter.

The noise is more like static or white noise, with clicks and maybe pops or beeps, rather than clicking with any regular features like speed or pitch plus on restart the computer produces a beeping or maximum volume, high pitched tone that sounds a bit like a scream that continues until I power down as when this happens my computer just hangs on the Windows starting screen. As soon as the company actually despatches my order I'll run the program or try from USB instead tomorrow. I have plenty of spare laptop hard drives I can use if it comes to it though and it would be a relief if it were the drive.

I've started saving boot logs. If they'd be helpful let me know.

Click on the Start orb, then control panel.

When the control panel opens find Programs or Programs and Features.

Find Microsoft Digital Experience and uninstall it.

Please run sfc /scannow.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Sart orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

A page similar to the one below will open.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.

To find sfc /scannow log, type cmd in the Search programs and files box,

cmd will appear above the search box under Apps., right click on it and choose Run as administrator, this will open the Elevated Command Prompt.  This will look simlare to the image below.

elevatedcommandpromptw7_zpseba8c499.png

copy and paste the following, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Click on this to open the log, copy it and paste it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

My boot problems were very severe earlier despite only minor issues prior to restart. I couldn't even get into bios to alter the boot order. I'm concerned I may have an issue with the motherboard as replacements are rare and expensive. It seemed to take forever to run startup repair and then start Windows, the computer screaming or later beeping throughout. In that time, I managed to get a 9 year old laptop working, except for the built in keyboard.

After removing Microsoft digital experience my computer restarted, without asking, which was scary due to earlier boot issues I'd had but for the first time ever my computer went straight to the Fingerprint account. I've tried creating a new account but it hasn't shown up in OS (C:) Users. Kiosk i still listed. I assume to fix this issue I'd need to manually edit files I shouldn't be fiddling around with.

I've cancelled my order as I now know the DVD-r discs have failed rather than the drive. I might just buy an OEM version of Windows 8.1 as the disc can be bought for only £23 more than the discs, dvd-writer and USB pen drives. I'll have to buy something with it to indicate I'm creating a new system but I really need a backup Windows machine anyway

I'm beginning to think I must have a virus as I've deleted the Trusteer rapport folder, yet a stopped service still keeps loading with Windows and I can't reinstall with the service listed. Is there a way to kill the service? It doesn't show up under msconfig.

I've run sfc /scannow 2 times prior to the current one over the past couple of weeks, so the log may not be as useful as it might have been.

I just ran CCleaner and it found minidump files, despite MiniToolBox not finding any:.

One occurred between the saved back up and the start of my problems. I used BlueScreenView but it doesn't put out a full log I can copy and paste here, without it looking like a garbled mess. Here are the details from that and the other Blue sods, as I like to call them, that have occurred since I bought the computer:

Please tell me you are not using the registry cleaner in Ccleaner.

What is the make and model of this computer?

Do you have all of your important data backed up to removable media, like CDs, DVDs, flash drive, another hdd?

With nature of your problems I would be inclined to believe that your problems are not related to infection, but we can run a couple of scans to determine this.

Please run the ESET OnlineScan

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

1)  Double-click on mbam-setup.exe, then click on Run to install the application, follow the prompts through the installation.

2)  Malwarebytes will automatically open.  If this is the first time you have run this version of Malwarbytes you will see an image like the one below.

mbam1_zps95cc812c.png

Click on Update Now, after Malwarebytes is updated click on Scan.

If this isn't the first time you have run this version, then you will see an image like the one below.  Click on Scan

mbam1_zps98e7fba9.png

You will be prompted to update Malwarebytes, to do so click on Update Now.

 mbam2_zps85f38f0c.png

3)  The scan will automatically run now.

mbamreplace_zps3ead4824.png

4)  When the scan is complete the results will be displayed.  Click on Quarantine All, then click on Apply Actions

mbam4_zps23e52ad4.png

5)  To complete any actions taken you will be asked if you want to restart your computer, click on Yes

 mbam4_zps490948cc.png

6)  Please post the Malwarebytes log.

To find your Malwarebytes log, download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.

To open the log double click on mbam-check.exe on your desktop.  When the log opens, scroll down toward the bottom of the log to Quarantined Items.  Copy and paste this in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

No, I haven't cleaned the registry, with CCleaner or anything else for that matter. CCleaner was installed when I had the problems deleting a file but I used other software. I ran it for the first time when I found the minidumps. I was looking at installed software for programs to erase because my SSD is only 250GB and currently the C drive was 257GB so I'm aiming to get down to 200 or less to allow for updates, new software and loss in size once formatted.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-6154ea based on a search for the product number and a third party website that still has it listed but the picture and listed specifications make it seem likely it is the model I have. Finding out the version of a computer is a common question on HP's forums and a method given doesn't work on my laptop. No where in the documentation does it say the model number, all that is listed is a product number and serial number.

Yes, everything is backed up on hard drives. No one should rely on DVD's to keep files safe in the long term because they are too prone to failure. I lost most of 18 months worth of photos, with the exception for the odd surviving disc and "keeper" that I saved on a computer, as well as lots of other items I'd assumed were safe, because of discs failing. Purchase to failure took less than 3 years. No DVD burned on my nine year old laptop has survived to the present, although a few CD's have. I asked a friend to check whether a few unused discs worked on their pc but the discs are useless. Now, every file is backed up automatically to hard drives connected to a Raspberry Pi controlled system. Anything important has a second backup made manually on a USB drive and maybe on Google drive. I use a different hard drive for OS backups.

I've rerun Eset's online scanner with the settings you suggested - it was one of a few I used when I thought I had a virus with. It didn't like the 9.5TB in external hard drives attached via USB (okay, so I'm the digital equivalent of a hoarder) at the time and was still running over a day and a half later and then crashed, so I've removed external drives this time and disabled the wireless connection, as I forgot to check the network settings because I can't have it erasing some of the things stored on my backup system. It is scanned with MBAM at least once every 4-5 weeks when the drives are removed - the case allows for easy access and hot swapping. I'll scan the external drives one at a time later.and if anything is found I'll upload a log. It took almost 6 hours to scan one half empty 500GB drive and an empty second one so it may take a few days.

I have MalwareBytes installed - both 1.75 and the new annoying version. I've used up my free trial already so the log may not be as useful as it could be and won't be buying it until they sort out the "Web Exclusions" feature and have switched to SSD. I run a full scan with MBAM 1.75 at least once a week and quick scan every time I remember to but, apart from the odd potentially unwanted program, nothing had been found. I have MBAM 2 doing a "Threat Scan."  I'm not sure if that includes all connected drives so I'll do one with 1.75.  I had issues with the website protection and the Web Exclusions feature, even with other anti-virus software disabled. I must have reinstalled it 3+ times trying to get it to work properly and not do something odd like redirect me to the first site I white-listed every time I try to visit a blocked site or half-way through browsing a site, suddenly block page 6 when page 5 was fine. I had to disable the website protection. Not that it matters much but v2 is uglier.

The Threat Scan listed nothing found on the latest scan. I'll use 1.75 to scan external drives later and if anything is found, report it.

I'm having issues with SuperAntiSpyware - it keeps crashing. Are there any known conflicts between it and other security software?

Did you run the hdd diagnostic from Seagate?

If you have not, you need to do this.

There should be a sticker on the bottom of the notebook or another sticker inside the compartment where the battery plugs in which will have the model number of your notebook.

Please run chkdsk /r

Chkdsk /r checks for bad sectors on the hdd and recovers any readable information.

Click on the Start orb and type in cmd in the Search programs and files box.  When cmd is seen in Programs above the Search box right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Screenshot2.jpg

Type in chkdsk c:/r then press Enter.  Please notice the space between the chkdsk and the /r.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

Restart your computer to start the scan.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
