I recently set up my old Dell INspiron 518 as an HTPC, here are the primary components:

- Intel Core2 Duo processor E7400
- DG33M04 SE0709 Inspiron 518 motherboard K068D 0K68D Intel G33 DDR2 LGA 775
- 500GB WD HDD
- 1 x PowerColor Go! Green AX5450 1GBK3-SH Radeon HD 5450
- Antec EA500D 500 Watt PSU

After wiping the HDD and doing a fresh install of Windows 7 (the PC came with Vista), the setup worked fine, I used it to playback movies and shows from the HDD with no problems.

I'm suddenly having some issues with freezing, usually after having played 1 or 2 episodes or movies with VLC. I go to pick another episode and then everything stalls. No response from anything.

I can move the cursor around and sometimes open windows but after clicking something, I get the spinning cursor and afterwards nothing ever recovers.

Any ideas?

Just a wild guess...but I would uninstall Comodo Internet Security...replace it with MSE or Avira Free...install Malwarebytes....then run scans of system with those applications.  Of course, update the defense apps before running the scans.

No evidence of CPU or hard drive overheating, no evidence of insufficient free space on C:, no evidence SMART concerns on hard drive.

Thanks.

I had a sneaking suspicion that may be the problem.

I'll follow your advice and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Thanks again.
