Microsoft announced today that have issued an out-of-band security update to fix the Internet Explorer vulnerability discussed in Microsoft Security Advisory 2963983. This vulnerability is actively being used in targeted attacks and allows remote code execution on the affected computers. Today's KB2964358 update will patch this vulnerability so that users of Internet Explorer are no longer affected. In a surprise move and a testament to the danger posed by this vulnerability, Microsoft released a patch for Windows XP users even though it is no longer officially supported.

This KB2964358 security update is currently available via Windows Update and all users, whether you use Internet Explorer or not, are encouraged to install it. To install the update, please open Windows Update and click on the Check for Updates option. Once Windows Update has finished checking, you should see a new update titled Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2964358). Please select that update and install it immediately.
If you do not see the update installed, check to see if it is installed by clicking on the View Update History option.

Microsoft has also announced that malware is being distributed via email that is claiming to be this update. If you receive an email that is supposedly from Microsoft and that contains an executable please do not run it. Microsoft will never distribute security updates via email.

KB2964358  not installing on my Win 8.1 PC.

I'm assuming 8.1 comes with & you have Internet Ex-PLODE-r 11 installed...

KB2964358 - Description of the security update for Internet Explorer for systems that have security update 2929437 installed: May 1, 2014 is for systems that have KB2929437 already installed.

KB2964444 - Description of the security update for Internet Explorer for systems that do not have security update 2929437 installed: May 1, 2014 is for systems that do not have 2929437.

Install the one that applies to your system (x86 or x64)

HTH :)

When I go to the M/S site, scan says my ie is current.

Why is that a bad thing?  Go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Click installed updates > take a screenshot of the first 25 or so updates and post it back here.

KB2964358  not installing on my Win 8.1 PC.

did you try to do a manual install from microsofts website?  Go to the download site and type just the number for the KB update your looking for.  Site is located here.

Expanding on czarboom's suggestion, the download links for KB2964358 for IE11 on Windows 8.1:

Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 (KB2964358) -for 32 bit systems

Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 for x64-based systems (KB2964358) -for 64 bit systems

Source: M$ Security Bulletin MS14-021 - Critical - Technet

>>>KB2964358  not installing on my Win 8.1 PC.<<<

Does it give an error message/code when trying to install thru Windows Updates?

EDIT TO ADD: Looking thru your screenshot of your update history, KB2929437 which "dictates" which update is needed on May 1 - KB2964358 or KB2964444 does NOT show as having been installed... M$ WU offers KB2964358...this contradicts M$'s instructions in MS14-021 - Critical

Make that 3 of us who are now confused

There's a simpler way to check IE11 version (sorry, I'm not an Internet Ex-PLODE-r guy, only use it for WU... and to download Firefox :P)

Now this is for Windows 7, I don't "do" the hideous Win 8 & Metro

Open IE>> Click the "gear" icon>> About IE>> shows latest security update version installed... also "Install new versions automagically" is checked by default, I UNCHECK mine (YMMV) I suppose it is possible that if this is checked, KB2929437 might install without interaction thru WU???

I dunno :scratchhead:
