Hello,

I'm ashamed that with my experience I have just continued to dig myself into a deeper hole for four days. I'll try to be as succinct as I can here in describing what's wrong, what led up to it, and what I have already done in an effort to correct things.

   My system is:

Dell desktop XP Studio 9100 with Intel 7 processor 64 bit and 8gb of RAM

             Windows 7 Pro

             I had been Using Firefox 28 (26 & 27 before it) Yahoo edition 1.28

             Java 7 update 51

I regularly use CCleaner(including registry), Malwarebytes AM and Spybot S&D, all free editions.

My firewall is Emsisoft Online Armor.

I have been guilty of occasionally using SlimCleaner (in Autoclean mode), despite having been counseled in the past to avoid any cleaning product.  Mea culpa.

Overall functioning has been cruising along without a hiccup for months.

On the 23rd I got a windows update with a driver for my graphics card, an nVidia GeForce 310.  I trusted and installed it although in the past, an update like this, concerning 3D, stopped my ability to print.

On the 27th I uninstalled Avast Internet Security (which was due to expire) and, in its place installed Bitdefender Antivirus Free.  It was on this day that Yahoo mail began hanging when I was logging in.  I was motivated to stay with Firefox because a) I like it, and B) There had just been an announcement in the news of a major vulnerability in IE.  I would have simply gone to Chrome which I had used in the past but after multiple problems following upon trying to stay out from under Google update, I had sworn off and uninstalled it.

On the 29th I began logging my problems.  All I could do to get out of FireFox was to start the Task Manager and quit the process.

In Yahoo help I found that I should "ensure javascript enabled, updated  sin3020.html".  Although this advice said it was only verified through version 24 of FF, I tried it.  I hit a dead-end when it said I should click "Install" to the right of "QuickJS 1.1"  No such option appeared, either under my add-ons or those available.  I can only assume this is something that changed/disappeared between versions 24 and 26.

I have read about "click to play" under how things have changed with regard to security concerns at Firefox and toggling javascripting on and off, but I do not comprehend it.

I tried installing "Tiny JavaScript debugger 0.9.5 & restarted FF.  A download of an update began, without my election.  It called for another restart.  When I did so, I found I now had Firefox version 29.

I next attempted to make sure I had Java enabled and updated (I realize JavaScript is something different).  In the add-ons manager, under plugins, I think after I clicked on update, the browser stalled at "Transferring data from wwwimages.adobe.com..." the URL read: "get.adobe.com/flashplayer/     I also got an error message: "A script on this page may be busy,, or it may have stopped responding.  You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."    The script name was: "chrome://amznuwl2/content/isProduct.js:173

I clicked Continue.  Nothing

I disabled both my antivirus and firewall and tried again.  Still nothing.

[Side note: Flash player update is something that has given me fits in the past, stalling my system.  Just like AA reader (apparently with collusion from Microsoft) It seems to not want one to specify "ask before . . . "; it only wants to install automatically, I have not been able to get along with using Flashblock or other products of that ilk.]

I went to java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml  where, under Java is not enabled, SOLUTION, "Browsers for Windows and Mac OS X", Firefox,

the instructions say:  . . . in the Add-ons manager

Select plugins

Click Java™Platform to select it

Click on the Enable button (if the button says Disable, Java is already enabled)

There was no "Java . . " appearing.

I next went to www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.htm

I eventually got to an update 55 download for 7.   It stalled, giving the following "Java Setup" message in a popup window:  Error 25025.  A Previous Java uninstallation was never completed.  You need to restart your computer before installing Java.

I clicked OK

Up popped another, reading: "Installation failed

The Wizard was interrupted before Java 7 Update 55 could be completely installed.

To complete installation at another time, please run setup again."

Clicking OK here reopened Java help.  I followed the prompts to uninstall older versions.  It stalled again.

After another restart of the computer I finally got Update 55 to install, but reporting "for 32 bit only".

I was now able to get into Yahoo Mail, using Firefox in its safe mode.  This seemed to indicate that the problem lay with some extension.  Back in regular mode, I combed through the addon manager and disabled them.

Another restart of Firefox . . . still no go on Mail.

I gave up and uninstalled Firefox.

I next tried Chrome, Opera and Slimbrowser.  All froze at the same point as had Firefox.

There are a few other concerns that I'm guessing are minor or unrelated.  I've written so much already, I'm going to hold on to those and pause here to see if anyone has any interest in helping me clear this up.

You are new here, so you probably aren't aware that Bleeping Computer does not support or endorse the use of registry cleaners or optimizers.   To the extent that the following gets posted for those who are unaware of our stance on this issue.

The following was originally posted by Animal, one of our Site Administrators.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in unpredictable results.

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

That is not a complete posting of the information requested.

Sorry, I was just guessing, trying to be funny on your handle.  Are you are correct I cut that one off short of the whole minitool output.  I tried to post a third time in reply, the third one containing the whole.  If that one didn't make it, I'll try again.

Your CPU is running at 55c, you should look inside the case to see if the fan and heat sink assembly are in need of cleaning.

Please run the two scans below, do the chkdks first, then the sfc.

Chkdsk /r checks for bad sectors on the hdd and recovers any readable information.

Click on the Start orb and type in cmd in the Search programs and files box.  When cmd is seen in Programs above the Search box right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Screenshot2.jpg

Type in chkdsk c:/r then press Enter.  Please notice the space between the chkdsk and the /r.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

Restart your computer to start the scan.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Sart orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

Arachibutyrophobia,

Hope I haven't lost you; I have complete faith.  Sorry it has taken me a while.  Yesterday after I got my cpu heatsink&fan off I saw there was nothing left of the thermal compound so I had to round up ArctiCleaner 1, 2 & Artic Silver 5.  It has a 200 hour break-in time so I may not see optimal temp immediately.

As for the scan, the chkdisk took all day but the sfc only about 20 minutes.  I'm about to try and paste the whole results output here.

The sfc is clean, no corrupt files.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Arachi...,

Right, so what's next--any ideas?  Have you seen any evidence that javascripting, or some other browser extension, could be at the root of the problem?  I have smooth browser and e-mail function if I boot in safe mode with networking.

  Yours, E

Since the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode let's perform a Clean Boot and see if we can find the culprit.

***This is a diagnotic tool for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.  This will not repair your computer, but it may point to where the problem lies so that a repair can be made.***

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

Step 1

(1)  Click on the Start orb, then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

(2)  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

afterstart_zps02764513.jpg

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

Step 2

(1)  Click on the General tab.

(2)  Click the Selective startup option.

(3)  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

msconfig_zps77b1ef82.png

Step 3

(1)  Click on the Services tab.

(2)  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

(3)  Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list, then click on Apply, then OK.  Click on Restart in the window that opens.

Caution:  I repeat, by disabling the Services your antivirus will not be active, for this reason I suggest that this process not be run while online.

If the problem does not reoccur after the reboot this means that there is a Service which is causing this proble, continue with the process of elemination to find the Service which is causing this in Option A.  If the problem does reoccur after the reboot go to Option B.

Option A

**The following is a process of elimination to find the Service or Startup item that is causing your problem**.

*  If the problem does not reoccur after the restart go back to Services and place check marks in half of the boxes and restart the computer.

*  If the problem still does not continue return to Services and remove the check marks that were added, then place check marks in the remaining half of the boxes and restart the computer.

If the problem resumes after a restart in one of these halves, you will procede with this process in the half where the problem occurs.  If this does not continue in either half you should repeat this process in Sartup

*  In the half of the Services that the problem is found, remove one check mark at a time and restart the computer to see if that  is the Service causing the problem.  Continue to do this with the Services untill the service causing this problem is  found.

Option B

Search Startup itmesIf the problem is not found in Services, remove all of the check marks, click on the Startup tab and repeat the search process there.

Caution:  If this is a laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

If this problem is found post the Service or Startup item that is causing it.

When you are finished using the Clean Boot go back to System Configuration and click on the General, then click on Normal Startup, click on [b]OK, then restart your computer.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.
