I havent had spyware problems for months and months, but I got something from a link in an IM from a friend who probably had the same thing. Went through tons and tons of programs, some worked, some didnt (yes I read through the topic before posting), but for the most part they dont actually get rid of anything, it just comes right back.

So.... here's the log I'm supposed to post:

EDIT: In case it matters, I was away from my computer for a few hours the other day and I came back to find about 8 IMs open with people that I didnt initiate. From talking to one of my friends that I had an open IM with, it looks like whatever's on my computer sent out the same thing I got all this junk from. You know, some garbage about "Look! Check out these pictures I found, they are so funny!" My friend said I just have to uninstall and reinstall AIM, so I've uninstalled AIM, but havent reinstalled it since these issues havent been resolved.

The other thing is that I just left my computer for an hour to eat dinner and game back to find the blue screen of death. Something about terminated unexpectedly blah blah. I wrote down what I could see on the screen before forcing it to shut down.

Hello,

It is really important you perform next instructions in the right order without missing any step!

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 1 minute. Click OK
  • (If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.)
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

* Download AlcanShorty from here.
  • Click the download button below and agree to download the fix.
  • Download Alcanshorty to your desktop.
  • DoubleClick alcanshorty_en.exe
  • Where it says "Destination Folder", clear the field and copy and paste next in the field: C:\ Then click install.
  • This will create a new folder on your C:\ called alcanshorty_en
  • Open that folder and doubleclick Run.bat
  • Once the fix starts, your icons and desktop will disappear, this is normal.
Make sure you have a working internet connection. In case your firewall gives an alert, don't block it,
because alcanshorty needs to download some additional files to let the tool run properly.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
-------------------
  • Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as)
  • Place qoofix.bat in your C:\alcanshorty_en - folder. (Important!)
  • Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
  • Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
  • The fix will ask you to reboot - so allow it to reboot.
-------------------
  • Download sidekickFix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as)
  • Place sidekickFix.bat in your C:\alcanshorty_en - folder. (Important!)
  • Doubleclick sidekickFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
  • Type Y for yes to start the fix and follow the prompts.
  • It will ask to reboot your computer, so please allow it to reboot.
Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply,
together with the contents of Look2Me-Destroyer.txt present on your desktop and a new HiJackThis log.

I've tried it several, times and look2me-destroyer doesnt reopen. I tried it once, waited about 3 minutes, then shut down the comp and tried again. Waited a minute or two, then left, came back a few minutes later to find a few popups open in firefox and some spyware alert stuff from other programs I've downloaded. I shut down and tried again, this time I waited 10 minutes, but nothing.

Ok, try next instead of Look2me-destroyer:

1. Download f-look2me.zip

http://www.f-secure.com/tools/f-look2me.zip

2. Unzip f-look2me.zip
3. Run f-look2me.exe
4. Reboot the machine

F-Look2Me loads itself as a service to gain system privileges. The service renames infected files and patches the adware in memory.
It also restores Debug Privileges for group Administrators. F-Look2Me requires administrator rights to run.

Then perform the rest of my steps I posted.
So instead of posting the Look2me destroyer log, where I ask to post it, you have to post the log from above instead.

And if that fails as well, skip that step; perform the rest of my steps first and try again afterwards. Could be because other malware present is interfering.

Um, sorry, it worked in about 10 seconds on the 5th try. So I went through everything without a problem up until qoofix.bat

I right click and save link as into the C:\alcanshorty_en folder I downloaded earlier, but when I double click on it, it tells me

"Qoolfix cannot run unless BFU.exe exists in the proper location C:\BFU\. Press any key to exit, please try again."

Should I have renamed the folder to BFU?

EDIT: I tried that, which worked. And now I've done everything upt ot he last step. The Dr.Web thing hasnt even finished its first scan and it's been about 2 hours. Not sure what's going on. Most everything seems to have been cleared up except for something one of my programs keeps coming up with multiple times per minute. I just screen shotted it because I thought that would be easier.

Hi, just perform the DrWebscan in safe mode instead.

Then post all the logs.

Ok, let's clean up a bit more first...

Concerning Adware Newdotnet.
Go to your controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and look if NewDotNet is present and choose to uninstall.
If not present, look if there's an uninstaller in the folder: Program Files\NewDotNet.
That uninstaller will be labeled uninstallX_XX.exe. (X represents the version number of the uninstaller.
If not present there too, look if it's in your C:\Windows. It will be labeled NDNuninstallX_XX.exe.
If still not present, use the following one:

http://www.new.net/support/uninstall6_90.exe

Reboot afterwards.

After reboot,

We also need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Still in your Microsoft antispyware, select the option quarantaine and delete everything present in there.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Update your sun java, because you are running a vulnerable version:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Perform another scan with DrWeb Cureit to take care of the leftovers and reboot afterwards.

Also Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of some leftovers if still present.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my signature.

Reboot once again and post a new hijackthislog in your next reply.

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
