You shouldn't have restore points active on the RECOVERY partition.  This is where the OEM stores the image of your computer.  This explains it best:

Note, although the title says XP, the message is the same.

What I meant by the above, is if something happens to the RECOVERY partition.

I'd recomend the following to narrow it down a lot more than minitoolbox ever will...
     Also, Microsoft offers this advice;

Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to this issue?

Please follow the links and the steps:

Method 1:

I would suggest you to first check if the services associated with system restore are working.
Check for the service Volume Shadow Copy if it is running or not. To check for the services –

a. Go to Start - Run and type Services.msc then press enter.

b. Under the Status column look for any entries that read as "Started".

c. And check if the service is set to automatic or manual.

Method 2:

You may boot in safe mode and then try to perform a system restore. This will help check if any non-Microsoft service is interfering with the system restore.

In Safe mode; you have access to only basic files and drivers. Refer to the link to start the computer in safe mode and then check -
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Now check in safe mode if you are able to perform the system restore- you may refer to the System Restore support articles for guidance-

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/System-Restore-frequently-asked-questions

Method 3:

If you can perform System Restore in Safe Mode, I would suggest you to put your system in clean boot state and check if you can perform upgrade:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

Method 4:

If issue persists I would also suggest you to try performing SFC (System File Checker) scan on your computer and check if the issue still persists. To view how to perform theSFC Scan click on the link provided below and follow the Kb article steps.

BitTorrent needs to go. It's well nkown that running torrent software is a one way ticket to infections of all sorts.

IObit software cannot be trusted, run a Google search on what did they do to Malwarebytes.

VLC Media Player needs updating.

It's best to remove any Yahoo software also.

Do you need all of those choices of CD/DVD burning software? It would be best to completely remove any old ones with Revo Uninstaller.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.
