I recently gave my father my "old" (as in, 3-year-old) laptop.  He doesn't use it for much other than playing solitaire, having occasional Skype chats with his brothers, and emailing friends.

The laptop always worked absolutely perfectly when I had it.

Since I gave it to Dad, though -- well, actually, within the past couple of weeks (he's had it for about a month) -- every time he boots it up, he'll get the page saying that the laptop didn't shut down correctly and that Windows Repair should be run.  It gives him the option of running Windows Repair (recommended) or starting Windows normally.  When he chooses the option to run Windows Repair, he says it takes about an hour for it to run before Windows is allowed to boot.

I brought the laptop home and ran chkdsk on it, as well as doing scans with two different programs (McAfee and Trend Micro.)  Neither AV program found any viruses, and chkdsk didn't find anything amiss, either.  I figured that was that and gave the laptop back to him.

That, apparently, was not that.

It's still doing the same thing on startup.  Still takes an hour or two for Windows Repair to run.  And I am at a loss as to what is causing it.

I have the laptop at my place again now, but the problem is that I cannot think of anything else to do to diagnose this, let alone fix it.

Does anyone have any ideas?  The only thing different from when I had it is that there is Skype installed on it now (I never had Skype installed on it when I used it.)  But I mean...could a simple program like Skype cause an issue like this?  I don't know.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can do -- any other programs I can run to try and diagnose the problem?

Well...does the system exhibit any problems that result in error messages?  Once the system boots into Windows...are there any discernible problems?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Could this problem be because he is shutting the PC down incorrectly?

Could this problem be because he is shutting the PC down incorrectly?

He doesn't know HOW to shut it down incorrectly...by which I mean, he doesn't even know that you can shut it down by holding down the power key.  He only knows how to shut it down using the correct method.  I never showed him how to do it.  He's 66 years old and let's just say he's not computer-savvy.

I can safely say that in the three years since this laptop was purchased, it's been shut down incorrectly exactly twice.  And both of those times were by me, maybe a year ago.

To answer your question, Hamluis: No, the laptop is not exhibiting any problems or issues once it goes through Windows Repair and boots.  The appearance of the screen asking to run Windows Repair is random; it doesn't appear every time the laptop boots up (it didn't show up when I booted up ten minutes ago, for example) but it does show up on average once a day.

He does shut it down every single time he's finished using it, and starts it up again when he wants to use it, so it's being shut down and started up probably four or five times a day (I never did that when I had it; it ran pretty much 24/7 when it was in my possession.)  I don't know if that would contribute to any issues.
