Hello!  I've roved the site for quite a long time, but finally signed up.

I've got an issue with a laptop.  It is a Gateway Model MT6451.

It is running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, 32 bit.

Processor: AMD Turion 64 X@ TL-50 1.6GHz
RAM: 2 GB

This is my uncle's laptop.  A couple of months ago, it was coming on, then turning back off almost immediately. I recommended a new battery. The new battery completely solved the problem until the other day, when the computer began doing the same thing again.

He called me again, after he had tried to start the computer a couple of times, and System Restore (or Startup Repair?) came up and said that Windows had not started properly, would he like to attempt to return it to a previous working state? So he did that, and brought it to me. It's actually been fine since I got it.

I know all to well how many problems can have the symptoms that this one has.

He tends to leave the laptop plugged in, since it will suddenly shut off with no warning if the battery runs too low.  So that shouldn't be it.

My initial thought was, "Ah, perhaps he needs a new power supply..." and then I remembered it's a laptop. I don't know much about laptop anatomy, so I don't know whether they have a power supply that can go bad like that.

I looked the event viewer. In Administrative Events, in the several days leading up to the problem, he got two Time-Service warnings (Event ID 134) a day. I'm guessing that he didn't have the computer online when it tried to check the time. It tried twice, a second or two apart, and then waited until the next day. This is what it says: "NtpClient was unable to set a manual peer to use as a time source because of DNS resolution error on 'time.windows.com,0x9'. NtpClient will try again in 15 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: No such host is known. (0x80072AF9)".

That happened, with no other events in Administrative Events, on the 14th, 15th, and 16th. It happened again on the 17th, but then late that night, I find this error from Eventlog (Event ID 1108) twice, the very same second: "The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing."

The 18th, nothing but the two Time-Service warnings -- but this time, they're 8 hours apart.

The 19th, the day it refused to boot, I have nothing until night-time, but the issue described above occurred in the afternoon. It starts with two Time-Service warnings. Then, a couple minutes later, an error from Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider (Event ID 7011): "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the avast! Antivirus service." Two hours later, two more Time-Service warnings. Finally, an hour after that, a warning from VLAN-AutoConfig (Event ID 4001): "WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped."

There is nothing in the App Error Events after March 31st, until it logged some entries yesterday and today (a VSS error 8194, a .NET Runtime Optimization Service error 1101, and the rest various errors from Search).

I can't find a minidump file.

I installed BattStat as a battery monitoring utility.  I Just about fainted when I saw it measuring the CPU around 70*C -- at idle! Looked at it with Speccy, and it's reading about the same. Max temp for the CPU is 95*C. I had to calm myself down and remember it's a laptop. I'm used to desktops. But I know laptops run hotter. I think this still has to be high. I think I'll blast it out with some canned air.

That still doesn't speak to the issue, though, I don't think... The laptop had been off all night before it refused to power up, and then came up with the repair thing. So it wasn't hot at the time.

How can I find out why it had to repair/restore? And whether this is an issue that is likely to show up again?

Could these temps cause it to have problems next time you start it up?  I'll be cleaning it today.

Thank you in advance, to anyone who can give me any ideas.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Sart orb and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

A page similar to the one below will open.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.

To find sfc /scannow file type cmd, run as administrator, copy and paste the following, then press Enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Alright, I finished the scan, and am attaching a log.  Apparently, there are some issues.

Please post the log in the topic.  The form it downloads in is difficult to read and I have no idea just what I'm actually downloading.  Click on the icon on the desktop to open the log, highlight it, copy and then paste it in your topic.

Oh, sorry about that! I will post it as soon as I get home.

I thought I would have to return the computer today, but he is letting me keep it.

Click on the Start orb, then type Services.msc.  Services.msc will appear above the search box, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

In Services scroll down to Windows search, click on this and see if it is running under Status.  If it isn't right click on it and click on  Properties.  Click on the General tab if it isn't chosen, then click on Start in the Service status.

Alright, I went into Services, and Windows Search is already running (Status: Started), and set to Automatic Startup.

The wife is home, so I'm done for the day.

If the computer is functioning enough for your father to use tomorrow, let him use it.

Alright, I appreciate it.  It looks like it should be alright for his class.  I've stayed off of it, and I just wanted to make sure that him using it wasn't going to change anything crucial.

I'll post when I have the computer back.  Thank you very much!

Okay, I have the computer back.  :)

It performed well, until it came time to turn it off.  He selected "shut down", and the pointer went inactive for a few moments, then became active again and nothing more happened.  He tried a couple of times.  I was able to get it to go into sleep mode, though it took a lot longer than normal for the shut down options to come up.  Then I woke it up and was able to get it to shut down after that.
