I think you should be able to find windows 7 for $100.

What is your motherboard so we can see if everything you are buying is compatible. Also, what are your current complete specs? It's hard to say if certain upgrades are worth it when we don't know what you are upgrading *from*.

This is not really a "good gaming pc" for 2014. However, in my opinion it should run Minecraft and Garry's Mod very well. I think only in the craziest scenes of garry's mod or minecraft would this machine show any slow down.

I am leaning towards that it is not worth it though. Because you are locking yourself into a pretty much obsolete computer. You'll never be able to upgrade it again, and your windows 7 OEM will be for this old machine not your next one. I think you should spec out a next gen computer as well, and then consider which to do.

But let's hear what the computer currently has in it.

My own suggestion would be to move to an AMD FM2 based system. Get an A6 or A8 if you can afford it. Those will get you far better performance than what you are looking at now, and leave some room to upgrade in the future.

Laptop: Alienware 14 : Intel i7 4700mq : 8GB ram : Nvidia GTX 765 : 256GB Plextor M3 : 1080P IPS display

Test rig: AMD Phenom X4 955 @ 4.0Ghz : MSI 970A-G46 : 8GB Ram : 128GB Plextor M5s : 2x AMD 5770's (Flashed to 6770) : PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 : Pioneer BR

Hackintosh : Gigabyte GA-H61m : Intel Celeron @ 3Ghz : 8GB ram : EVGA GTX 550Ti : Patriot Torx 2 64GB : Silverstone Strider ES-50 : OSX Mavericks

If you are trying to hold to budget and get a good bang the AMD route is best, I ran the 3.2 Intel chip, the AMD for similar money will beat it hands down.

OK, I have redone all of my research, and I think this will be a killer Gaming PC. The only thing I don't know about is the graphics card.

It looks fine with the exception of the board only having two ram slots, true many say 8 is the sweet spot.  But it limits future expansion, don't get me wrong it will be a runner as is just throwing that out there.

Good idea making a whole new computer. You definitely don't want to buy a bunch of new parts to stick onto your old junky HP motherboard.

2x4 is probably going to run better than a 4 and a 8 anyway, since it can run dual channel.
