in the last few hours my browser has slowed considerably for some sites but not others, google it seems is at it's usual speed but other sites, especially forums, seem to have slowed up on loading( as if some giant bandwidth hogging piece of content had been added to the page). i use chrome on a windows 8 computer and have the setting ticked for "plugins, click to play" but i still have much slower loading times on some sites than i did a few hours previous. I have checked windows task manager and haven't NOTICED(although there could be something i did not recognise) anything out of the ordinary. any thoughts as to what is wrong?

thanks

a crucial extra note: the slowing down isn't the intitial opening of the page it's the time afterwards when some of the page has loaded but not all of it and the "blue arc" is still circling.

Run CCleaner. Use the default settings. No need to use the Registry Cleaning Tool and it has the potential to cause other problems.

Be sure to pay attention while installing and UNcheck any offers of toolbars such as Yahoo.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

You may have picked up some adware. Or it could be just a temporary condition caused by the internet....not your computer.

download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Delete.
Confirm each time with Ok.
You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

If AdwCleaner doesn't find anything, solve the problem, post the results of it and the Mini Tool Box scans.

  • download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
    Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

CCleaner, is it free software or just free trial? the download page has "buy now" links on it. am running other two tools right now, will wait for your answer regarding CCleaner as i am also unsure as to whether it might remove files i need.

adw cleaner has found a few things

services  :    vToolbarUpdater18.0.0              i never installed this and can't see an extra toolbar in any browser of mine

registry  :  AVG secure search and safeguard toolbar things, i assume these are not an important part of my antivirus?

will allow adwcleaner to perform the cleanup once i know these things are alright to get rid of.

CCleaner....just use the default settings for cleanup....it's free and safe.

Allow AdWare Cleaner to remove those items. You should see better search results after....less promo website ads.

AVG search protect crapola is actually ASK...renamed to fool you.

Do you need the Blender program? If not uninstall....If you do need it, suggest reinstalling.

VLC is showing errors, too. Are you having problems with it?

After you install CCleaner, on the left is listing of tools. One of them will list what is in your startup in both Windows

and browsers. You should look through those lists and remove from startup programs and add-ons that you don't need

in startup. Basically, all you really need is the OS, firewall and security programs. The rest is optional and can be accessed

when needed.

You have JAVA installed. Most users do not need it and it is a malware magnet. JavaScript you need....JAVA you may not.

If you are not sure if you need it, disable it in your browser(s) add-ons to test if it is needed. Websites will alert you if it is disabled

where JAVA is needed such as some game or other.

i absolutely need blender for 3d work i do, it only crashes because it sometimes is a memory hog when i am using it to process huge files. vlc crashed recently when i tried to convert some videos with it, otherwise i think it's fine. java, i need for some stuff on my harddrive, i have given it the setting to disable it running form the browser so it should be safe?

am running adware cleanup now and will then download CCleaner.

thanks

with CCleaner and disabling startup items, going into tools-->startup do i then just select items i don't want to start automatically and click "disable"? will this prevent the program selcted running at all or will it merely mean i must deliberately open it to start it, for example if i disable the 7z stuff will i still be able to right click on 7z and rar files to open them in 7z?

CCleaner run for removing temp files and such, apparently removed a gigabyte of useless stuff. did not try removing startup items as most looked important

You should use CCleaner often. That is a lot of temporary files, etc.

Choosing to disable only removes from startup. Yes, you will still be able to use 7zip, etc. Either through right click,

desktop icon or default such as if you have VLC as your default then it would load and open when needed.

I would think using Blender and editing using VLC would work a lot better if you had more RAM. 4 GB seems low to me.

You can check to see what your computer will support here: DDR3, DDR2 and DDR RAM memory upgrades from Crucial.com

Just search at that site using your comp's brand name and model.

ok thanks. any idea about that vToolbarUpdater thing then, it didn't show up in adwcleaner the second time. and the self deletion by adwcleaner was also weird.

p.s. i clear my browser history and caches daily but i was shocked by the shear number of cookies CCleaner detected, i removed them all.

It is part of the AVG toolbar....I would think it got removed.

I meant to mention earlier seeing you have used Eset's online scanner. It is used and recommended by the

pros in the malware removal forum. If you haven't used it since the slowdown started or if you are still getting slow

speed, it would be a good idea to update the scanner and use it again to see what if finds.

AdWare Cleaner only can be updated by uninstalling the program and installing again.
