My internet router shows two networks. One is my own and the other is called "Unnamed Network". At first I thought it was a neighbors, but whenever I unplug my router my network and the Unnamed one disappear at the same time. When I plug it back in, they reappear at the same time. They both show the same information when I hover the mouse over them. I called in for Wifi troubleshooting, but by then the Unnamed Network had disappeared and the guy helping me didn't see anything unusual. Yet, it keeps happening.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea what's going on?

Hi,

First off it could be a few things.  Do you know what type of WiFi connection you are using?  Meaning N type or G type?

To do this:

  • Go to your desktop
  • at the bottom right corner right click on the WiFi icon (should look like a cell phone bar icon)
  • A list of connections should show up
  • hover your courser over your connection
  • What is the info under Radio Type:    (example Radio Type: 802.11n)
  • Here is a great basic guide to WiFi Networking here.

Why do I ask this?

Because your router is doing one of a few things.  It is either:

  1. Able to send out both N and G type connection types, and your WiFi is selecting one.  Meaning the other is not configured and is showing up as Unknown Network
  2. Windows is showing you via the network card in your device all connections in your area.  Your connection and another connect that is not displaying its SSID

The SSID is at the basic your network name.  You can select on routers if you want that info broadcasted for all to see or not.  If you turn it off, some adapters will still notice the signal out there but cannot determine what it is, so it’s displayed as Unknown Network.

Let me know what you find there.  We will then determine if and what the connection is.

thanks

Hello!

The Radio type is 802.11n

I think you're right about it being #1 as when I was setting up the router and when I log in to change the channel I do notice that under Network Config the mode is listed as 802.11g/n.

OK cool.

So are both enabled and configured in your router?  And are you only using one type?  Meaning your connection is 802.11n, so your computer will never connect to a G signal.  In that case turn off the G signal, and reboot your router and modem (might be one in the same).

  • If not unplug the modem and router.  Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug back in the modem and wait until it boots and the first 3 or 4 lights stop blinking.  (about 1 min. or so)
  • Then plug back in your router and again let all boot up.
  • reconnect your computers WiFi

Should be good to go.

If its still showing up then we need to check a few settings in your router.

Overall, I think that the unknown Network is your neighbors network,  You can check this by:

  • disabling your WiFi and plug in with a Ethernet network cable to your router.  If its gone then its another WiFi somewhere near you.
  • In this case it will always show up, I live in an apartment complex and my WiFi shows 9 different networks, and if I disconnect from my network my WiFi then reverts to Unknown Network.  Why, I do not broadcast my SSID.  So unless I know the SSID by name you cannot try to connect to it.

It could also be related to XFINITY WiFi

Intresting... is xfinity WiFi only allowing G type, and you need to upgrade to get N type?  No expirence with them, I tend to buy and setup my own modem and routers.   Or is that a DSL thing?  Thanks Rkilroy.

SoOverxlt, might want to ask Xfinity siting this guide, why that is there?

Are you good?  If you are great, if not post back I will follow for another 24 then jump out.  Hope you where you need to be.

It could also be related to XFINITY WiFi.

More specifically, you might be talking about Xfinity WiFi Home Hot Spot:

https://www.comcast.com/wifi/hotspots.html?SCRedirect=true

If you are running a Comcast modem with built-in gateway/router, then this would apply.

But, any such network should show up as "xfinitywifi"…it should not be un-named.

Make and model of computer: Dell Inspiron 1525

How the computer is connected (wireless or wired): Currently wired, but I mostly use wifi

Make and model of Router: Arris TG862 (Xfinity provider)

Approximate Distance From the router the PC is if its a wireless connection: No more than 11 feet

What type of internet you have (Dsl, Cable, T-1,etc..): DSL

You have Comcast Xfinity correct? Then it would be cable, not DSL…unless somehow Comcast has started offering DSL in some areas.
