Hi,

For the last few weeks my computer has been slowing down almost to a halt by having just 4-5 tabs open on Chrome and even with Maxthon Cloud Browser that was recently added.  I have done everything I know about cleaning and scanning for malware and viruses but nothing seems to work.  Nothing was found.  I have used rogue killer, AdwCleaner, and it found something in Firefox but it could not be removed successfully, so I decided to uninstall Firefox and that was removed.  But even that has not improved the performance.  Every couple of hours  of working online, the laptop just freezes and the CPU goes to 100% and nothing can be done.  Even the Windows Task Manager freezes and takes minutes to open and then even when it opens, I cannot do anything.  I usually shut down and restart because it is really useless.

If I go to yahoo news, it just slows to such an extend that my typing is displayed few seconds after typing.  The fan kicks in and its humming sound continues until I turn it off.

I have XP Windows, using Chrome and Maxthon Browser, even added Add Blocker to Chrome but that has not resolved the issue.   Microsoft essentials would no longer update and would freeze so I had it uninstalled.  I wanted to reinstall MS Essentials again, but MS no longer supports XP so that was not possible.  Currently I have Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Iobit ASC, CCleaner, JRT, and AdwCleaner and nothing has been found after screening the laptop with them.

I read on Bleeping computer and actually added JRT, AdwCleaner and that did not resolve the issue, after reading how it helped other users in removing their spyware, but it did not work for me.

My computer info is as follows:

MS Windows XP Service Pack 3 version 2002

1gb of RAM

What else can I do?

I don't know if it'll help, but it's best to remove IObit ASC, if you've ran it, it may be the root of your issues. These all-in-one cleaning "utilities" often does more harm than good & BC Fourms doesn't recommend the use of such software. Nor do I.

Furthermore, there are still many of us who remembers the issue between IObit & Malwarebytes a few years back, if you want to know more, Google search "what did IObit do to Malwarebytes" w/out the quotes & you'll see. I wouldn't place any of their software on my computer, no matter what.

So what are you using for a regular AV? Some of the choices you mentioned having are good, especially the first two, but you need an AV installed on your computer. It is good that JRT & AdwCleaner didn't find anything, but keep in mind that these aren't "fix all" tools for everything.

My guess is that if ASC didn't mess up something, then you may have an scvhost.exe process that's hogging up all of your CPU. Narrowing it down can be tricky, Have you tried running System Explorer? You can run a security scan & check all of your running files/processes.

This is a start, hopefully other members will chip in. I have seen these things go away on it's own,

And one last thing. turn OFF Automatic Updates for Windows, totally off & reboot. If it's the cause of the scvhost.exe spike, you'll know it's fixed.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

What is strange is that I no longer have AVG anti-virus but if I understand the above report it indicates that it is one of my antivirus programs.  Same with MS Essentials.  Do you want me to remove ASC or hold off at this point?  Really appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Cat1092,

Thanks for your feedback, but I will need to follow Louis instructions for now since he will be assisting me in resolving this issue.

The only reason I used ASC was because it was able once to remove a virus that no other program was able to.  I am not saying that it is the best, but it was able to remove a trojan I acquired when I was on a overseas trip and I have used it as a backup for other programs.

Thanks for your concern and help.

Back up and Format / reinstall the OS do the usual tweaks that go with having low system specs [Intel Core Solo @ 1.86GHz - 1.00GB DDR2] Like lightening the process and service load ect...   This is just what I am recomending for what seems to me to be a mess. Good luck.   :bananas:

Abiove suggestions by Dalek Sek...are premature and tantamount to using a shotgun to attempt killing a flea, IMO.

Iobit software...is known to cause various system problems...I would do as previously suggested and uninstall it.

I have no intention of ever "taking over" a topic...this is an  open forum and good comments come from many different sources.  I tend to ask for general information that I deem useful for anyone attempting to assist.  Do not defer to my comments unless they seem to make sense or lead to a path that has not been previously explored by another member.

I would also uninstall Driver Booster...and Iobit Malware Fighter, in addition to Advanced System Care.  I would never suggest that anyone install Iobit software, for any purpose.

I would uninstall One Care Advisor...and replace it with a bona fide AV program and firewall.  The development of MSE made this application obsolete...and installation of One Care is known to cause system problems where other AV/Firewall solutions are installed.  MSE and the Windows Firewall work fine.

I would uninstall Spybot...and replace it with SUPERAntiSpyware..

I would also uninstall AVG, whether I wanted to keep it or not...based on the premise that it may damaged currently.  If you choose to reinstall it, then ignore my suggestion of MSE.

The idea that any system needs such a "product" as Driver Booster...is somewhat silly, IMO.  A working driver, a drive without a problem...does not require "updating" at all.  It's only when a driver provides additional functionality...or the current driver is damaged...that one needs to consider removing the current driver and replacing it with another.

Louis

Driver Booster, Malware Fighter, Advanced System Care, One Care Advisor, I'm assuming that all of those programs were run to try and fix the problem is why I suggested using the shotgun to shoot the flea. Undoing just one of those programs "fixes" makes me want to rip my eyes out.  Going to be interesting to see when things get fixed and what was done to do it. :clapping:   I'll learn something watching this thread me thinks.

Hi guys,

Ok I removed Driver Booster, Malware Fighter, ASC but could not find One Care Advisor and do not even remember ever downloading the program.  I could not find the program in uninstall list.  Where do you see that program?  Thanks for your help

Louis,

What are all those error messages that were posted at the very top of the report?  Should I be concerned about or not really?

Thanks again

Hi guys again,

Ok I see that it is tool bar, but could not find it anywhere. Searched for it on IE, Maxthon, and Chrome and it was not there. Any ideas how it could be removed?

 Thanks

Its in the list as [OneCare Advisor (Windows Live Toolbar) (Version: 03.01.0072)] could try removing the plugin maybe?  Or try this http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/c/b/4cb845e7-1076-437b-852a-7842a8ab13c8/OneCareCleanUp.exe          I found it on the interweb.

Dalek Sec,

thanks I tried the link and it said that it was successful in removing the OneCare Advisor, however; when I rebooted the computer the CPU was running at 100% thanks to ehrec.exe which I have never seen before.  It turns out that this program is part of MS Media recording program after doing some online research.

The computer is better but it still feels slow.  I might test it for few hours and then give a better conclusion.  Thanks for your help.

Info On Ehrec.exe , since you don't seem to be running MCE 2005...I would be concerned about the appearance of this.

The errors reflected in Event Viewer...are just more indications that "something" is wrong with the system.  Those messages often do not pinpoint what is wrong because they are mere symptoms of a deeper problem, just as different pains in your body can indicate a serious illness or injury.
