Hi

You are running HijackThis from a temp folder. You will need to move hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups when you fix items. These backups could easily get deleted in a temporary folder.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Please remove from Add\Remove Programs:
P2P Networking
and
Windows AdControl

It is a good ideea to print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdControl] C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\WinAdCtl.exe

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} -


Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Delete these folders:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <-- this folder
C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\ <-- this folder

Empty the Recycle Bin.

REBOOT normally.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?

Hello...
Well, Cyro told me to put HJT into it's own folder.... well, I can't... I cannot access "My Computer" desktop folder. Much of my system is running fine, but "My Compter" is empty and certain files in folders on desktop will not open and cause "Windows explore has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message and my desktop goes blank (to nothing but wallpaper) for a few seconds then comes back. But I can open the same files (e.g. .doc, .mp3) through the programs they are associated with (i.e. Word or Windows Media Player) no problem. I already posted HJT log and followed Cryo's directions to fix check:

I cannot access "My Computer" desktop folder.

Go to Start --> Run, and type cmd in the Open box, then click OK to open a command prompt.
Type sfc /scannow, note the space after sfc.

Insert you original Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive. This will restore your protected system files on your computer.

Download this file:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/folder_reg.zip

Unzip the content on your Desktop and (double)click the registry script and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.
Tell me if you can access "My Computer".
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?

Hey... sorry... didn't mean to cause confusion. Anyway, thanks again for your reply... the thing is, I do not have my original windows CD. Any suggestions since I don't have it?

Cyro,
The registry report is the thing that you said to do, right? Start, run: CMD, "sfc /scannow"? Well I just did that and it said: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache." Then, "Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM now".

Unzip the content on your Desktop and (double)click the registry script and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.
Tell me if you can access "My Computer".

no dice.... still can't access "my computer" and still haveing desktop problem from above still as well

Please write down the error number, if you get one, and post it. Or post any information about this error.

I have no idea what the cause could be.

Search for this file on your HDD: shell.dll. Is it there ?

Upon doing a search,
"shell.dll" is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32
"SHELL.DLL" is located in C:\WINDOWS\system

Concerning the error message:

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience."

Error Signature:
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Offset: 001206e7

Then after I click to see the technical information about the error report, it gives me this giant list of stuff which I cannot highlight and copy, but below that says that the following files will be included in error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\Patick\LOCALS~1\Temp\db3d_appcompat.txt

No. Reinstall Internet Explorer. Find a windows CD and try to restore your protected system files.
