I have still Windows XP SP3 but I am going to transfer to Windows 7 in about a month. In the mean time, yesterday, April 19 2014, suddenly Windows XP takes a least 5 minutes to Log On. Then, among my normal desk top, Windows Task Manager appears each time. And, naturally, Windows is very slow. My laptop which is connected via WIFI to my router works ok.

Could you help me with these problems in the mean time until my transfer to Windows 7 ?

Thank you !

That Speccy snapshot will help the community here provide a more accurate answer. Your personal information, including any license keys or physical IP address will not be shown.

Check out mine in my sig below as an example.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

Hello Louis,

Sorry for the delay, family visit. Please find the result from the MiniToolBox below. Hope it is as requested. I have less luck with Speccy (spsetup124.exe). I keep getting the following error message " Failed - Network error". I don't know why. Internet Explorer works ok. Will keep trying.

Are you running both ESET NOD32 & MSE? If so, you need to remove one. If you have an active license of NOD32, you don't need MSE anyway, as NOD32 is much better. Java needs to be updated or removed. If you're going to upgrade it, use Revo Uninstaller for the removal, then download & install the latest version. Running old Java versions is a huge security risk, many doesn't even need it installed.

Also, you likely don't need Adobe Shockwave Player, Flash is usually all that's needed. CCleaner needs updating.

Given all that you have installed, if your computer can hold 4GB RAM (or more), go for it. Because according to your CPU specs you can run Windows 7 64 bit. But with 2GB, it's inadvisable, because it's the bare minimum needed for 64 bit Windows & minimums won't hardly run in the real world. If you don't intend on upgrading RAM, stay with 32 bit. Either way though, you'll benefit from a RAM upgrade, but if sticking with 32 bit, no need to spend the cash for more than 4GB. Windows 7 does a much better job of managing RAM than does XP. That's the deal with XP, the more you give it, the more it'll take. I believe you'll be a happy camper with Windows 7.

It looks like you also have some duplcates of a few apps, once you install Windows 7, these can be cleaned up. Anything that was installed from the factory likely won't install on Windows 7 anyway, some of these are too old to be using today. in particular some of the CyberLink software.

So far, that is what I see. Personally I believe that when you install Windows 7, a lot of this will clean itself up. But check those 2 AV's & remove/upgrade Java ASAP. There is a removal tool on the ESET site if needed, to purge your computer of it, if no longer licensed to use. I had to use it when downgrading from ESET Smart Security to ESET NOD32 AV. Here is the link to the tool, if needed.

MSE removed.

Java removed & upgraded.

Which is better Revo Uninstaller or ESET uninstaller vs Microsoft "Add or Remove Programs" ?

Adobe Shockwave Player removed.

CCleaner updated.

I already bought a Windows 7 sp1 x32 DVD in anticipation. After the spring works, I will concentrate in upgrading Windows to 7 and look into ur suggestion about 4 GB RAM.

I tried to find the duplicate apps you mentionned without success. Is there a specific place in Speccy where it mentionned ?

Log On is fine now but the "Windows Task Manager" window still appears as soon as desktop opens. Is there something that can be done about that ?

Thank you for all the advices !

FWIW:  I still run XP Home on this system and I can tell you that your described symptoms are NOT attributable simply to XP being unsupported.

My only problem now is "Windows Task Manager" window opening when I log on. It's probably something I did without knowing. Not a big problem, but anoying.

To completely remove an ESET product (NOD32 or Smart Security), the ESET uninstaller is best because it's designed to remove all components, including registry keys of the app. I tried the other ways in the past & was unable to reinstall ESET products in the future due to leftover components from an old install.

Many security products must be removed by their specialized removal tools, which are provided free of charge. I posted the link to ESET's tool above. It can still be used to cleanup things left over by other uninstall methods. Until then, your system may be shown as protected by the removed ESET product.

Glad to hear that you got things sorted out. Just remember this in the future when uninstalling security apps, use their tool for best results.

It took me 2 times to remember the ESET removal procedure myself. Mainly because I seldom uninstall it & when I do, it's because one of the other top offerings has a hard to resist promo. Currently am using on several installs an unlimited use (on my network) of Bitdefender Sphere 1 year (Total Security 2014) that was featured on the Newegg site for $19.99 w/free shipping ($100 savings).
