Hi all,

I've been having the worst time with my laptop. My problem originally started when I tried using two external Sound Blaster sound cards with their proper drivers. Whenever I'd use Firefox or Pale Moon, the machine would lock up and I'd have to restart manually. The only way to use the sound cards is with the generic Windows drivers. There were almost two weeks straight of receiving BSODs when I'd restart until I moved a hub to a different USB port.

Now, when I play videos using VLC or MPC, they use 100% of the CPU. I recently upgraded RAM to 8GB thinking that would resolve the problem but no dice.

I also get errors sometimes when opening Windows Explorer with a "server execution failed" error. I ran System File Checker and Startup Repair. SFC doesn't replace any files or see any files that need repair.

I use CCleaner to clean temp files about twice a week. I'm running both MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Webroot SecureAnywhere but I'm wondering if I have some sort virus. I had the Conduit malware that removed manually because neither program detected it.

Can anyone help with scanning the laptop to try to get rid of these issues? I've wondered if there's a bootkit in the MBR that's causing these troubles but I want to fix this properly. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I had this issue more than once with windows 7.  It does not matter how much ram you have.  I had both a Alienware with 16GB of RAM and little computer with 4GB of ram.  Both tapped out.  The easy way to fix this is to do a backup of all your files.  (such as pics, videos, etc).  Then do a Clean reinstall of Windows.  This involves reformatting your Hard Drive.  If you do not want to do this I will be glad to help you.

I will need some info to assist you.

First I need you to grab Speccy you can download it here. (this is made by the same company that make CCleaner, and will give a total printout of your machines current state.)

(this is from DC3 thanks to him for the easy guide)
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

speccy7_zpsfa02105f.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

speccy3_zps1791b093.png

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.
NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A TEXT FILE AND REMOVE YOUR IP INFO UNDER THE NETWORK TAB.  THAT IS UP TO YOU.

Next I need to see the BSOD info.  To do this we need Bluescreenview, you can grab it here.  Download your version and run it as follows.

(again thanks to DC3 for the following guide)
.
When the scan is done you will see an image similar to the one below.  Please disregard the area highlighted in red, this image is used in another set of directions as well.

bluescreenview2_zps56d29dda.png

Click on Edit and then Select all.

Click on File, then Save Selected Items, save the report as BSOD.txt, click on Save.

You need to open Notepad, to do this go to All Programs, Accessories and click on Notepad.

In Notepad click on Flie, then Open, this will open in Library, if it hasn't opened Documents do so.  If it has opened Documents you should see a file which is titled readme, click on this, highlight the content, copy it and past it in your next post.

Lastly, please only work with one of us at a time.  Also resist the urge to take matters into your own hands.  This is to 1. Allow me to find the solution to your issue, and 2. To keep from chasing our tails when helping you.  If you have any questions please ask.  If something is not clear please ask before you do it.

Please Allow 24 hrs. between posts for my next post.  We help more than one person at a time.  Thanks for trusting us here.  I look forward to your reply.

Thank you for replying to my post, czarboom. I'd rather not do a clean reinstall so I'll accept any help you can provide. If the last resort is to do a reinstall, I completely understand.

The following are the specs from Speccy. No information came up in Bluescreenview. I think the dumps were cleaned from my system. I haven't experienced a BSOD since I changed the hub to a different USB port. I think the issue was that the USB port I had the hub connected to was 2.0 and forgot the hub was 3.0. I'll restart my system and if i get a BSOD, I'll paste the info here.

Your CPU is running at 74C, this is a little too hot.  Try blowing out the insides via the vents with a canned duster (canned air as is is mistakenly referred to).

I would suggest looking in the Device Manager and see if there are any yellow warnings or red errors.  If there are any the tree will be expanded in the section the driver is in.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

From what I've seen, server execution error is likely caused by an incorrect registry setting.

Do you have another user account on your computer? If so, go to that account and see if you get the error message.

If you don't have another account, you can create one for testing purposes.

There is a registry edit that could possibly resolve the error. OR you could create another user account for yourself, transfer all your photos, documents, music, favorites, etc. to the new account.

OR you can try the Microsoft hotfix for that issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2444677

Uniquity,

thanks for getting back to me, please disregard the bottom portion of my orgional post,

Lastly, please only work with one of us at a time.  Also resist the urge to take matters into your own hands.  This is to 1. Allow me to find the solution to your issue, and 2. To keep from chasing our tails when helping you.

I forgot which forum I was in, and am still learing the in's and out's of online troubleshooting.  That being said I see DC3 has responded to you, please work with him.  He has helped me more than once and is super smart when it comes to these issues.  Both solutions posted above me are good options.  Both of these people are much more expirenced at this, so I defer to them on this.

I did see some process that look a little weird, but  these guys will give you great support, if your still at a end and cant get this fixed send me a message and I will continue to help you through a clean install at this topic.

If there is anything else I can do to help please ask.  Thank you.

Thanks all for your help for your help thus far.

Queen-Evie: I don't get the "Server Execution Failed" error under Administrator. I'm pretty sure I ran the Fix-It a few months ago but I ran it again today. I'll post if I get the error again.

BTW, I remembered something else that's odd. When uninstalling programs, it sometimes takes as long as 10 minutes for it to start when the configuration message comes up in msiexec. I've had to close Webroot SecureAnywhere for it to start as well. When uninstalling under Administrator, programs uninstall normally.

dc3: I dusted out the fan and the CPU is still around 70 C. I'm also using a laptop cooler. There are no errors in Device Manager.

Today, the system shutdown when I was ran the Windows Experience Index in System Properties, which is the reason for the event in the log at 3:56 PM.

Here are the results from MiniToolBox:

You have a lot of Items in your machine.  Unless you need it

µTorrent (Version: 3.3.2.30303)

should be deleted, unless its a business P2P type thing.

Where did you download all these games from?
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe (Version: 2.2.0.95)
Big Fish Games: Game Manager (Version: 3.0.1.60)
Blackhawk Striker 2 (Version: 2.2.0.95)
Cake Mania (Version: 2.2.0.95)
etc

I only ask because when your done with them they should go.  If they are trying to connect to a server, or just que up it could be a system hog.

Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (Version: 1.0.0)
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (Version: 7.5.5111.1712)

Same program or is one for x64 and x86 browsers?

IrfanView (remove only) (Version: 4.36)

Did you get these from Cnet?  Make sure you check to see its a good source.  A lot of free download sites love to place add ons, and others that can mess things up fast.  If you want it go to the source site and download it.  If its free where it should include a MD5 SHA1 or SHA-256 number that you can use to make sure its a good copy.  sites like www.onlinemd5.com are where you can check the download aganist.

Make sure you update these.  Java 7 is at update 55, I think.  Dont know off hang about JavaFX  java.com for info.
Java 7 Update 51 (64-bit) (Version: 7.0.510)
Java 7 Update 51 (Version: 7.0.510)
Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.1.9.8)
JavaFX 2.1.1 (Version: 2.1.1)

How many browsers are you using?  Do you have them all updated?
Pale Moon 24.4.2 (x64 en-US) (Version: 24.4.2)

Three versions of Roxio, are they are running?
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 1.0.439)
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 12.1.77.0)
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 5.0.0)

This is a big number but with all running at the same time could be why, 1. your running out of RAM, and two your processor is maxing out and never shuts off.
Total Pagefile: 28564.35 MB
Available Pagefile: 26589.5 MB

Why so many partitions?  Are these all from the same disk, left over items or others?  Meaning did you do this on purpose, if so could I ask why?
3 Drive e: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:931.51 GB) (Free:37.72 GB) NTFS
4 Drive f: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:931.51 GB) (Free:25.48 GB) NTFS
6 Drive l: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:2048 GB) (Free:119.99 GB) NTFS
7 Drive m: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:1677.93 GB) (Free:294.34 GB) NTFS
8 Drive p: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:931.51 GB) (Free:78.1 GB) NTFS

Im sure DC3, and Queen, know better than I.  But, all the same those might need to be addressed at some point.  again, keep following them, and good luck.

You need to repost just the speccy link it's hard to decipher anythig out of that wall of text on a white back ground. It's blowing my eyes away. Looks like some heating issues, saw what looked like a couple strange services running. Your paging file is set at 30gigs. Never let windows manage paging it sucks at it. You have 8 gigs of system memory so I would set paging on ranging 400-2048 just to make it happy. Again, if you let windows manage it'll eat up your hd and set its range to 28000-28000 and use up almost 30 gigs of HD space even though it isn't being used. Setting it to 400-2048, only 400mb of disk space will be used & it can use only up to 2048 IF it needs it. If you use a ssd hd paging should be stopped completely as well as defrag, windows search indexing too. It will kill a ssd drive in no time.

TIP: If you don't use hibernation you can reclaim up to another 10 gigs of hd space just turning it off. In cmd.exe (administrator mode) run command: powercfg -h off I do this myself and before making a full backup. no need to backup a empty file that's 10 gigs large. Windows places a hidden file at c:\hiberfil.sys in hibernation mode the memory state of the computer is temporarily stored in that file until it wakes again and it moves everything from that file back into memory. If no hibernation is used then turning it off helps on hd space. Turning it back on is easy run command: powercfg -h on.

Outdated programs which need to be updated (current versions in RED)

Java™ 6 Update 7 (Version: 1.6.0.70) Version 7 Update 55)(Czarboom already mentioned this one)

Adobe Reader 9.5.5 (Version: 9.5.5) Version XI (11.0.06))

Adobe Flash Player 12 ActiveX (Version: 12.0.0.77) Version 13.0.0.182)

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that while a toolbar may be useful to them, they sometimes do have an adverse effect on your system. You can uninstall Google toolbar to see if it helps. If not and you do use it, then reinstall.

I agree with technonymous about the Speccy log. It's much easier to decipher when posting the link. There is nothing in the report that compromises you and your computer. The only thing it shows is your Windows account name. No one will be able to do anything malicious because they would need a lot more than your name. Bleeping Computer takes the privacy and security of our members serioulsy and we will not suggest tools if they provided information someone up to no good could use against you.

I could post a Speccy link and have no qualms about doing so. All anyone would find out is my real name.

My logs always have the Networking info in there at the bottom.  IPs names etc.  No hashs or anything like that, but I would think that putting as little info on yourself (be it even a private IP) would be best.  Dont know if I was doing it wrong, but I do know it show a networking section.

just FYI

You have a lot of Items in your machine.  Unless you need it

µTorrent (Version: 3.3.2.30303)

should be deleted, unless its a business P2P type thing.

I use this for BitTorrent

Where did you download all these games from?
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe (Version: 2.2.0.95)
Big Fish Games: Game Manager (Version: 3.0.1.60)
Blackhawk Striker 2 (Version: 2.2.0.95)
Cake Mania (Version: 2.2.0.95)
etc

I only ask because when your done with them they should go.  If they are trying to connect to a server, or just que up it could be a system hog.

These games were preinstalled by Dell but didn't show up in Programs & Features. They were under on "WiIdTangent Games" listing. Uninstalled.

Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (Version: 1.0.0)
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (Version: 7.5.5111.1712)

Same program or is one for x64 and x86 browsers?

Just one listing in Programs & Features. I uninstalled this.

IrfanView (remove only) (Version: 4.36)

Direct downloaded from Irfanview's site (alternative image viewer).

Make sure you update these.  Java 7 is at update 55, I think.  Dont know off hang about JavaFX  java.com for info.
Java 7 Update 51 (64-bit) (Version: 7.0.510)
Java 7 Update 51 (Version: 7.0.510)
Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.1.9.8)
JavaFX 2.1.1 (Version: 2.1.1)

I updated to 7 Update 55, which is strange because my system's set to check for updates. Updated JavaFX.

How many browsers are you using?  Do you have them all updated?
Pale Moon 24.4.2 (x64 en-US) (Version: 24.4.2)

Pale Moon and IE are the browsers installed. Pale Moon released an update yesterday so I'm now on 24.5.0. I uninstalled Chrome months ago but CCleaner had it listed for cleaning. I ran a manual uninstaller to remove it completely.

Three versions of Roxio, are they are running?
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 1.0.439)
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 12.1.77.0)
Roxio Creator Starter (Version: 5.0.0)

Came preinstalled. Only listed once in Programs & Features. Uninstalled it yesterday.

This is a big number but with all running at the same time could be why, 1. your running out of RAM, and two your processor is maxing out and never shuts off.
Total Pagefile: 28564.35 MB
Available Pagefile: 26589.5 MB

Followed technonymous' advice and changed paging to 400 MB-2048 MB.

Why so many partitions?  Are these all from the same disk, left over items or others?  Meaning did you do this on purpose, if so could I ask why?
3 Drive e: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:931.51 GB) (Free:37.72 GB) NTFS

7 Drive m: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:1677.93 GB) (Free:294.34 GB) NTFS
8 Drive p: (Elements) (Fixed) (Total:931.51 GB) (Free:78.1 GB) NTFS

Drives L and M are two partitions on one physical drive. Drives E, F and P are their own drives.

Im sure DC3, and Queen, know better than I.  But, all the same those might need to be addressed at some point.  again, keep following them, and good luck.

I couldn't find Java 6 but I updated Java in both IE and Pale Moon to Java 7 Update 55. I uninstalled Abobe Reader weeks ago and it wasn't listed in Programs & Features. I ran Abobe's cleaner to completely remove it. Updated Adobe Flash Player in IE. I rarely use IE, which could be why the version was so old.

I didn't like the idea of my IP info available, which is why I didn't use the Speccy URL. In the effort of resolving my issue, I created the URL, which is below.

I could post a Speccy link and have no qualms about doing so. All anyone would find out is my real name.

To ease your concerns, your IP address in Speccy is 192.168.1.4

That is NOT your real IP address assigned to you by your internet provider.

It IS the default IP address of your router. Router default addresses are in the  192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255 range.

Anyone looking up the address in your Speccy report will find out nothing about your computer and your location.

A IP address look up will be totally blank. Or say Unknown.

I completely understand. For some reason, I thought the actual IP or DNS was shown and not the router's. Must be my old age.

I'm gonna miss my thirties in a few months.

You said you replaced the memory. It looks configured wrong. The first thing I see is that your i5 2450 cpu is rated for 10661333 memory. The memory you have now is overclocked to 1866. That's 533mhz over stock clocks and the timing looks off at 11-11-11-32. If the BSOD's say any memory errors then this is probably why. The bsod mini dumps might have more info. Also I see that you have many USB devices plugged into the machine. Many USB devices like this should be plugged into a external hub to get more stable voltages. A combination of both of these things could be pushing it over the edge nad causing instability. You should reset the memory manually in the bios to 1333 and 9-9-9-24 or might even do 8-8-8-24. I am just taking a best guess on timing range. You would have to look on the packaging for recommended timings.
