Hello. I was redirected here from the Virus Removal Logs section. I have dial-up with AOL 9.0, and my problem with it is that when you click "Sign On," it goes to the dial-up screen, but it just sits there blank, with nothing happening.

Here's a MiniToolBox Log:

It is probable that the anti-malware treatment has damaged your AOL files and the most effective cure would be to uninstall your AOL web applications and re-install them.

Uninstalling them is simple :- click 'Start - Control panel - Add/Remove programs', then click on AOL in the list of installed software then click 'Uninstall' near the top of the screen.

IF you still have the AOL 9 install CD, then re-installation is easy. Just put it in your CD drive and follow the on-screen instructions. The problems arise if you have lost or mislaid the disc! In that case, your best bet is to use a friends connection to download the AOL software, save it to a memory stick and then try installing from the memory stick onto your own computer. If that doesn't work you will have to contact AOL and see if they can supply you with another disc.

UPDATE: I decided to try installing a copy of AOL 9.6 Desktop that I got from online a year or two ago, and it set up and connected to the Internet fine.

Thanks for letting us know you resolved your connection issue. Happy Computing.

One thing, though- AOL connects and stays connected to the Web just fine, but the AOL Weolcome screen is blank, and there's a box that says Upddate your Billing Information, but it's totally blank, too.

And one other thing: AOL still has to re-dial from time-to-time and semi-frequently has AOL Errors where it disconnects and I have to sign on again. Why do you suppose that is?

It's a long time since I had a dial-up connection - with AOL as it happens - but what I think is happening is that each connection is only good for a maximum time, and when that is reached you need - or the system needs - to re-dial to start a new time period.

As for the AOL errors, how reliable is the phone system in your part of the world ?  If the phone system is capable of dropping your connection this would explain the need to log-in again.

Analog telephone lines were never 'conditioned' to carry data the way a DSL line or Digital Subscriber line is. Like in the old days when you would hear clicks or cross talk or an echo. Those 'noises' affect the AOL connection. Any sort of 'noise' will cause redials. The central office switch having glitch will do it too. Any of a myriad number of reasons that you may or may not hear on a voice grade line will cause redials.

The Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.

Thanks. I'm in the U.S.A, but I guess I don't have the newest phone lines in my house.

Although I do wonder why AOL never seemed to do this in the past... it was weird how my previous AOL 9.0 was doing this, then one day it couldn't even Sign On, and I thought it was a virus so I went through all the virus help here on the forum, and when we were through, it still couldn't Sign On, and the solution turned out to be installing and running this AOL 9.6.

One thing, though- AOL connects and stays connected to the Web just fine, but the AOL Weolcome screen is blank, and there's a box that says Upddate your Billing Information, but it's totally blank, too.

I still wonder about this, too.
