If you located what you thought was the plug, a red jack on the back of the computer with the mic symbol, it may be muted. Double left click the skeaker symbol in the taskbar by the clock. The Master Volume Control will popup. When the Volume window pops up select the optiontab it the taskbar in the upper left corner. Then select properties. Make sure the Microphone is checked. Now make sure it is unmuted.

Has the mic ever worked?
If not, or even if it has, the drivers may not be installed as well.

Open your device manager and see if any of the entries have a yellow or red icon. If any do, delete it/them. Let Windows reboot, find new equipment and reinstall it with the appropriate driver.
