Well I'm back again with another problem to be solved.

Sorry if I've put the topic in the wrong place

So this time it is a problem with the program Nexus mod manager not having acces to change the registry keys. And for this case it's this

Error writing to registry keys

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NXM_File_Type\shell\open\command

RegSetValueEx failed; code 5.

acces denied

And I wanna add that its the same for

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\nxm\shell\open\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FOMOD_File_Type\shell\open\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\OMOD_File_Type\shell\open\command

So what I want from this is first to know how to bypass this problem and give the program(user that I am on THAT IS Adminstrator) acces to the registry key

And for a bonus I want to know how to fix furthur problems with the same case.

Cheers

Marcus

I see you are runing Windows 7. Did you run the program elevated (run as administrator)?

If you run regedit elevated, can you write to said registry key?

OK, I thought you were familiar with the registry, because of your post.

It's better that you don't use regedit when you're not familiar with it.

Didier Stevens is concerned that you'll ruin your registry and consecutively (or in turn) cause your Win 7 to have issues?

(1) Backup your Registry FIRST. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows/windows-registry/
(2) Read carefully http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Regedit

You can easily access the Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Start Menus Search box. The User Account Control asks you to authorize access by clicking Continue. The Registry Editor appears with an expanded menu of the five registry key sections.

That dosen't help me with what to do.

Alright this is the deal. I know how to use regedit, as far as you guys use explanatory words.

The big problem in this is that windows security have gotten broken or something and are denying everything that has with registry keys.

This problem accually occurs for every program on my computer when they try to change the regs.

And as far as I know it isn't my anti virus program that blocks everything cause I have turned it off for the past month.

Hopefully this helps you to understand.

Cheers

Marcus

Crazy Cat is correct, you can make your Windows machine unusable if you write or delte the wrong registry data.

But let's check the permissions. Start regedit, go to your key (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NXM_File_Type\shell\open\command), right click and select Permissons...

What do you get?

Yeah, I can understand the screenshot.

But it doesn't explain why you get your error: the Administrator has Full Control over the registry key, so there shouldn't be an access denied.
