It worked before and I checked using device manager to make sure the driver was up to date. I've wandered all over control panel and settings but haven't found a way to get it to work. Anyone with suggestions?

The laptop is Windows 8 compatible; it's all installed and working just fine as far as I can tell except for the microphone. An external plug-in mic works. And the internal one worked last week with Windows 7 when I did a Skype video call.

Go to the manufacturers website for your laptop and download the latest audio drivers for your machine and reinstall them. I had several clients lose audio capabilities after installing Windows 8/8.1 . Also check the sound options in the control panel to see that the mic is the default recording device. Posting your laptops make and model number would be helpful in finding a solution.

Re Lenovo X300 type 4052 model A12

The driver for audio has already been uninstalled and reinstalled. Lenovo doesn't provide/have any newer drivers for W8.1.

The mic is enabled and Device Mgr. shows that it is working correctly, even though it obviously is not.
