Heyo,

I can't connect to anything which uses SSL; websites, online video games. Pretty much all of my online videogames which I try to connect to (Diablo 3, League of Legends, Path of Exile, Guild Wars 2) are giving me invalid certificate errors, as well as all https websites. I use Mozilla Firefox, and google.com gives me this error:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com. Peer's certificate has an invalid signature. (Error code: sec_error_bad_signature)

    The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
    Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.

This error first began yesterday; I was going to go to paypal.com to sign in, but I mistyped it as paypall.com. I have WOT and kaspersky and some other things and they informed me I made a horrible typing mistake, but maybe I got a virus or something from paypall.com? My security programs and whatnot redirected me out of paypall.com but when I tried to go to paypal.com, this is the first instance where I had the Secure Connection Failed error. The error which I get from paypal.com and other websites are all exactly the same error message as above, sec_error_bad_signature.

Additional Information:

-Kaspersky Pure 3.0

-Scanned computer with: Malwarebytes, Spy-bot S&D, adwcleaner, JRT (Junk Removal Tool), Kaspersky 3.0 vulnerability scan and full scan, sfc /scannow in cmd

-When using safe mode with networking I am able to connect to https websites (google, paypal, etc.)

-My computer time, date, and timezone are all correct.

-I use Mozilla Firefox and I have IE (don't really use IE but I need it for SQL Management Studio and Visual Studio's team viewer)

-In IE if I go to google.com and hit continue anyways after it tells me the certificate is bad, and click on the error icon in the URL, after installing the certificate for google.com (which it says is an OK certificate), it still shows the bad certificate icon.

-In League of Legends: when I submit my username/password it throws the bad certificate error, after clicking View Certificate and installing the new certificate with the Certificate Import Wizard, it says the certificate is successfully installed but I still cannot connect to the game server.

-Other online videogames and Steam: They don't give me the certificate error, they give me different individual errors which I've looked up and are all connection issues.

-Diablo 3: Error: Hmm, something went wrong with a security certificate. Please try restarting the Battle.net app. If that doesn't help, you should contact your network administrator. Sorry about that!

G'day EmptyAlice, and :welcome:  to BC !

 Can you check that your connection is not going through a proxy?

Clcik on the orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced > Network > "Settings" button > No Proxy

Ah thank you very much for the reply, yes I'm currently using no proxy. I checked that setting as well but I've been searching google all day so forgive me if I forget one or two things I did. I previously used the add-on Foxy Proxy but uninstalled it maybe a month ago and I had no problems with this error while using it or after uninstalling it.

My computer's time, date, and timezone are all correct. I haven't changed any security settings or changed anything recently, I was just going to go to paypal and then it told me I couldn't. My only other guess is with the Heartbleed bug, vendors are all changing their certificates and maybe my computer isn't automatically detecting the new ones? I don't know if I would have to delete the current certificates and install new ones or something.

We will just run these first before we get to the drastic stuff.....

Download Screen317 Security Check   and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
* Please post the contents of that document.
Note:: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please download MiniToolBox   to desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:

* List content of Hosts
* Flush DNS
* Report IE Proxy Settings
* Reset IE Proxy Settings
* Report FF Proxy Settings
* Reset FF Proxy Settings
* List last 10 Event Viewer log
* List Installed Programs
* List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

Copy and Paste the logs produced back here in your reply

Open a command window and type in:

net start sppsvc

and then hit enter....   see if this has resolved the issue

If this does not help, then . System Scan. The scan will look for bad Windows files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

1) Click the Start Button
2) Type: cmd.exe
3) Right-click the cmd.exe file and select 'Run as Administrator'
4) In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow
5) Reboot and see if that resolves the issue.

Also,

 there is another possible cause for this issue. Back when Vistra was first released, there was a "free" Registry Cleaner program that (on 64bit version of Vista) would delete the registry enter that tells Windows where to find the slsvc.exe file (that's the Vista equivalent of the sppsvc.exe file). This would cause a System Error 3.

Now, on the surface, this doesn't sound the same as your issue, but we found that if you used the Undelete funtion in this free registry cleaner, it would recreate the Registry entry that it had deleted, but it would do it incorrectly.  So the registry entery would be undeleted, but Windows couldn't read it.  At this point, if you tried to start the slsvc.exe file, the "System error 2 has occurred" error would occure.

I can't be sure this is what happened with your Windows 7, but if you have used any Registy Cleaner program recently, it may have deleted an imported Registry key.

My point is this, you have TuneUp Utilities 2013 installed....which is a glorified Registry Cleaner.....Bleeping Computer does not recommend the use of these products.

Spybot serach and destroy is no longer up to scratch. A better alternative is http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/superantispyware/

Software protection service successfully started, still not able to connect to https websites. I did sfc /scannow earlier today but there was one error it gave which it couldn't fix, I'm going to start the scan again to see if I can get that error message.

Thank you very much for your input on TuneUp Utilities and Spybot S&D, I'll install the alternative you linked and see if that catches anything.

As well as what you already have to do  :  :) ....

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

THEN run MBAM (malwarebytes)...DO NOT REBOOT BETWEEN RKILL AND MBAM..(it is already on your pc....be SURE to update it...)

* Download  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free  and save it to your desktop
* Double click the desktop icon, click Run, then OK
* Click Next
* Select I accept the agreement then continue to click Next then finally click Install
** Uncheck Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium if you do not want the free trial of the paid version, then click Finish
* If you are notified the Database is out of date click Update Now
* Click Scan Now >>

----------

** Note: If Malwarebytes will not launch please do the following to launch Malwarebytes Chameleon:
* Click Start (Start, Search, All files and folders for Windows XP) then type mbam
* Double click one of the four following files (if one does not work try the next one, and so on) - A black command window will open.

* Follow those instructions until the Malwarebytes program starts the scan

mbam-chameleon.scr
mbam-chameleon
mbam-chameleon.exe
mbam-chameleon.com

----------

** When completed click the down arrow on Export Log and select Text file (*.txt)
* Save the file to your desktop as MBAM
* Click Apply Actions then restart your computer if requested
* Copy and past the contents of MBAM.txt in your reply

Malwarebytes: I ran this earlier today with no errors but I went to run it after rkill just now, it said the database was corrupt. I've never gotten that before, but it updated and I'm running it now.
