Win update error msg 80073712

Using a new Toshiba laptop.  Win 7 pro. Apparently it's never installed any MS updates since I got it about 6 months ago. I've tried all of the various troubleshooting items that MS suggests, but to no avail.


It's also done wonky things, like refusing to acknowledge me as the administrative user, and not being able to find the DVD drive (even tho the device manager says everything is ok.)


Other than reinstalling the ISO file, can anyone help me with this?
