What looked like an updated version of Kaspersky Internet Security broke down pc

I thought I was just installing more updates from Kaspersky Internet Security when this program broke down my computer and turned off my antivirus protection.

 

I had to read through the terms and conditions and I guess I did not read them quite well enough.  

 

It slowed down my computer and made it completely dis-functional.

 

When I turned it on in safe mode and ran a spyware scan on Malwarebytes, it showed about 23 objects infecting my p.c. when previously there were none. It provided me with a long list of malicious objects to delete.  

 

I attempted to re-install my Kaspersky protection which had about 111 more days left on it.  

 

It would not let me re-install it and claimed there was a problem with the license.  

 

I felt stupid giving my permission for that new program to get on my computer. I was mislead because the dialogue box was identical to the one that's supposed to belong to Kaspersky.  Unless I'm mistaken, I think this was a virus masquerading as a new version of Kaspersky Virus protection.  I tried to get support from Kaspersky and got no help from them.  

 

When my attempts to re-install Kaspersky did not help, I installed free Norton protection for 30 days. 

 

I could not find any reports about anything like this on the web.

You don't want to run more than one active antivirus as it can cause falsepositives and make your computer unstable.

 

Please post the Malwarebytes log.  To find your Malwarebytes log,download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.

 
To open the log double click on mbam-check.exe on your desktop.  When the log opens, scroll down toward the bottom of the log to Quarantined Items.  Copy and paste this in your next post.

Please post the Malwarebytes log.  To find your Malwarebytes log,download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.

 
When trying to open the mbam-check.exe you listed, I got a dialogue box to say it was from an unknown publisher and I pressed cancel.  
 
I opened up the most recent log in my  Malwarebytes program and could not comprehend what it was even talking about.  
 
It lists the approximate date and hour I did the spyware scan and says
 
"-0400."   Then it lists the name I gave my computer and says "null" "message" "starting IP protection"
It reads this way over and over all the way down the page.   
 
I thought the log would tell me the names of objects it quarantined and that I deleted but this was not the case.  
 
I have never heard of mbam-check.exe.   A search for this on my computer brought a result that opened Malwarebytes.

There are three ways that I aware of to access the malwarebytes logs.  The one I posted is the easiest to use, this is why I included it in my tutorial.  Just for your edification, this information came from a staff member at the Malwarebytes website.  I have been active here at Bleeping computer since 2005 and have never made a suggestion which has endangered another member's computer, and I don't intend on ever being responsible for that.

 

I'm not sure what you expected to find when you looked at the log, but reading the log has a learning curve associated with it.

 

There are two other ways to access the log, as I suggested, they are considerably more involved.

 

To retrieve the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 scan log information (Method 1)
 
*Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
*Click the History Tab at the top and select Application Logs.
*Select (check) the box next to Scan Log. Choose the most current scan.
*Click the View button.
*Click Copy to Clipboard at the bottom...come back to this thread, click Add Reply, then right-click and choose Paste.
*Alternatively, you can click Export and save the log as a .txt file on yout Desktop or another location.
*Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
 
To retrieve the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 scan log information (Method 2)
 
*Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
*Click the Scan Tab at the top.
*Click the View detailed log link on the right.
*Click Copy to Clipboard at the bottom...come back to this thread, click Add Reply, then right-click and choose Paste.

*Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

When I commented on your post I was not trying to blame or accuse you in any way.   I was just explaining what the message on my screen  said.    A family member has advised me never to put anything on the computer without knowing what it is and never to perform any action that I don't understand the details of.   

 

As far as finding someone else to help me, they can if they want to but my guidelines would be the same with them.

 

I do thank you for the work you're doing to try to solve my problem.   My laptop is now completely broken down but I will

 

try the things you suggested when it's fixed.  

 

Also, I did uninstall one anti virus program before installing the other.

I had only thought that you were uncomfortable with my suggestion.  I don't have any problem with helping you. 
 
The advice your family member gave you is good and should be followed.  I realize that you lack of computer knowledge places you at a disadvantage in a situation where you need to take someone's advice.  I can only point out that I've been posting here since 2005 and enjoy a good reputation for the work I do here.  I'm not about to suggest anything that would be detrimental to a computer. 
 
One of the Root Administrators at the Malwarebytes forums had posted the use of the mbam-check.exe.  This is a quick and easy means of accessing the malwarebytes log.  The first thing I did was to try it on my computer, this way I know what I'm suggesting to other members.
 
If I make a suggestion which you don't understand feel free to ask me about it and I will explain what it is and what it does.
 
It is important that you post the malwarebytes log.  If you restarted malwarebytes after running the scan it will have removed anything malicious that it had found.  For this reason rerunning malwarebytes will not produce the information we need.


Please scan your computer with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
