Hi,

I am cleaning a computer that was badly infected with viruses. The computer appears clean now but explorer will not start when I log in. It gives the above message and then I end up on a black screen where the desktop should be. It works fine in safe mode.

I have tried the following:

1) diagnostic boot

2) disabling shell extensions

3) system restore

The restores failed, diagnostic boot didn't yield different behavior, and disabling the non-Microsoft extensions also failed to fix the problem.

I discovered that explorer will run if I run it as administrator (opening task manager -> New Task ...). I also discovered that the screensaver will fail with the same error (0x00000022) if I leave the computer unattended.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Glenn

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Here's the info:

Speccy: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/swFmkx0ejpi1Qki7wNQYRiy

Note: Speccy didn't pick up the amount of memory (6GB) or the motherboard (unknown). It picked up the CPU (i3-2100) but that info got wiped out during the other tests.

MiniToolbox info attached.  Pasted log into post - Hamluis.

hello :hello:

Did you format the pc? Or just cleaned it? Also, Any updates installed while you were working on it?

Please run System file checker in an elevated command prompt (click start>type 'cmd' into the search box>right click and choose 'Run as Administrator') using the below instruction

To Run the SFC /SCANNOW Command in Windows 7

1. Open an "elevated command prompt" (right click -> Run as administrator), and do step 2 or 3 below for what type of scan you would like to run.

2. To Scan and Repair System Files
NOTE: Scans the integrity of all protected system files and repairs the system files if needed. Please see red WARNING box at the top of this tutorial.A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This may take a little bit to finish.

Please run the Speccy snapshot again.  Occasionally it produces an incomplete scan, this is one of those time.

Have you made any changes to this computer recently before this problem started.

It looks like there are a couple of corrupt drivers.  I'm pressed for time this morning, but I will look into this later to see what can be done about these.

I ran the sfc /scannow and nothing showed up.

Will run speccy again later.

Speccy essentially ended up in the same place. I am not surprised because on the Control Panel -> System window the OS doesn't show the total memory either,

The corrupted drivers are for Tages. Don't know much more than that.

This computer hadn't been used for 4 months because of viruses and this problem, which may or may not be the result of a virus.Looking at the older event logs I saw an interesting error regarding the SOFTWARE vob being corrupted. Unfortunately, the computer was booted and forcibly shut off numerous times when this first showed up so it's hard to see where the problem started. It could have been a partially run update too. Aside from this explorer issue, it works just fine. If not I would have formatted and started over a long time ago.

Uninstall Speccy, download it again and run it.

The total memory will have no effect on this, it only gathers information about the computer's software and hardware.

Please follow the instructions below to run the Startup Repair, I want you to run this three times.

Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.

A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.

Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.

Part A, Steps 1a - 6a

The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.

How to burn ISO image using Windows Burn Disk Image.

Notice:  This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.

1a  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.

2a  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.

3a  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image.

4a  In the image below you will see Dick] burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.

burndiskimage1_zpsb502b181.png

5a  In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.

burndiskimage2_zps17a9d6ff.png

6a  After the image has completed being burned click on Close

Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.

Part B, Steps 1b - 10b

1b)  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer.

2b)  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy.

At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes.

3b)  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use.

After this is done click on Next.

w71_zps6dbda47e.png

4b)  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window.

This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.

w72_zps2a656a0c.png

5b)  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations.  This will take several minutes.

No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.

w73_zpsd5483f05.png

6b)  Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next

w74_zps490f9a17.png

7b)  Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

w75_zps9941e858.png

For a future reference, there are several other diagnostic and recovery tools available in the Windows 7 System Recovery Options including System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt.

8b)  The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems in the system files.

If Startup Repair finds a problem with any system files the tool may suggest a solution which you will need to confirm, or may solve the problem automatically.

w76_zps3dd75d83.png

9b)  Startup Repair will now attempt to repair whatever problems it found with system files.

Note:  If Startup Repair did not find any problems with system files you won't see this step.

w77_zpsd8be95eb.png

Important: Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair process.  This is normal, you should allow it to continue until you see the Restart your computer to complete the repairs window.

10b)  Click on Finish, this will restart your computer.

w78_zpsd49257fb.png

It is possible that the Startup Repair will not be able to fix the problem.  If the Startup Repair tool determines this, it may automatically run the the repair after your computer restarts.  If it does not automatically run the repair but you are still having problems with Windows 7 repeat these steps to run Startup Repair again manually.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I uninstalled Speccy and then downloaded and re-installed. Same result.

Rather than booting to DVD, I booted to the repair partition and ran the Startup Repair tool. It didn't find anything. Technically, the system did boot normally since the system comes all the way up and I can log in.

Your first post stated the following.  Is this Windows Explorer you are referring to?

The computer appears clean now but explorer will not start when I log in.  It gives the above message and then I end up on a black screen where the desktop should be. It works fine in safe mode.

Then you post the following.

Technically, the system did boot normally since the system comes all the way up and I can log in.

Does this mean that you can now access Explorer?

Yes it is windows explorer. No, it does not start without me doing so manually via Task Manager. But Windows considers the system start a success if you even get that far, and therefore the Startup Repair tool is saying there's nothing wrong with the startup process.

What is the make and model of this computer?

Have you tried to uninstall Tages SA?

It's a Gateway DX4860-UB20P.

I uninstalled the Tages software but no luck. I'm not sure if they were properly installed in the first place because the first run of the install program installed the new version. I ran it a second time to uninstall it.

Use the link below to take you to the Tages homepage.

http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm?page=5.5.htm

Click on Activation, then click on Completely removing T@ges from your system.  The instruction for removing it from the computer are found there.

Edit:  Try running the Speccy and other scans after you have uninstalled Tages.

The installation for T@ges I refer to above is the one you will find at that site.

I ran Speccy (same result) and MiniToolbox (results below). I also ran a virus scans and not much new.
