Husband’s computer, occurred on 4/3/2014 major problem. Norton 360 didn’t work. System is XP Svc Pack 3.

1. While perusing the web, he got Norton Window which said it blocked an attack and removed it, then ran Norton complete scan but computer shut down. After restart, can’t access Internet, Copy and Paste, Help and Support for System Restore and rstrui.exe missing. Multiple other problems exist, no printers, no network adaptors,  Word says document can’t be registered and not possible to complete links from other documents.

2.Only program that can access the internet is Norton 360 Update but can’t access Norton Support or Power Eraser, etc. I ran another complete scan, nothing found. I receive Norton error 8504.101 sometimes when opening Norton 360.

3.Tried Safe Mode to no avail, ran chkdsk /f but no problems found.

On another computer downloaded Norton Power Erasure, Microsoft Malware Removal Tool and Malwarebytes to USB. Husband’s computer recognized USB, was able to run Microsoft Malware which found no malware; ran Malwarebytes which only found and fixed Chameleon but computer still bad.

4.Was unable to run Power Eraser from flash drive.Ran chkdsk /f again, no problems.

5. Updated Norton 360, then ran complete scan, no problems found.

Still cannot use Internet Explorer, Norton Power Eraser, System Restore, etc.

6. Downloaded Norton Bootable Tool to usb, ran it, booted husband's computer from usb, Norton Power Erasure didn't work but Scan Tool did, no problems found.Still cannot use Internet Explorer, Norton Power Eraser, System Restore, etc

What do I do now? Norton community user recommended I do nothing else myself and referred me to this forum.

Backup your files...

There is no solution to your outdated XP... You may fix it today but it WILL get randomly infected ~tomorrow.

Move to Win 7/8 or Linux.

Sad but true.

Agree with TsVk!, Windows XP was overall a good operating system, but it's day has ended. You did not mention what model of computer you have, but if Windows 7 compatibility can be verified http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20 (Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor) - you did say no Internet access, etc. You may need to get it from another computer, I spent less than US $70 for a legal OEM Windows 7 Home Premium COA sticker and install disk. Hope this helps and good luck!

How interesting, Bleeping Computer does not do malware removal or system repair for XP anymore??.   At least users with XP will realise from that  Infected and slightly screwed system, maybe something blocking XP file access, but OH XP means  "There is no solution to your outdated XP"

Considering XP is still second in terms of OS in use on the market.

Though I agree with going to Win7  (but not Linux)  there are still a lot of systems including in businesses, supermarkets, ATM's etc using XP as the background OS

Yes, we do...and I have moved your topic to the appropriate forum for malware issues.  Malware issues generally should not be posted in the XP forum, since the personnel are not authorized to treat such within this forum.

Hello
For the connection try these...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

If needed : type these one line at a time, press enter after each line. See if it works after each.

netsh interface ipv4 reset
netsh interface ipv6 reset
ipconfig /flushdns

Now do these,or copy these to a USB and run..

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
[list]
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • .
    .
    .
    ADW Cleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
  • -- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on each one and uncheck any items you want to keep (except you cannot uncheck Chrome and Firefox preferences lines).

    .

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
  • .

Beware if you run the JRT (Junk Removal Tool)  It deleted folders necessary for Google Chrome to run when I ran it as well as folders for another purcased software program.

Won't let me remove adobe reader 9.5.4 and j2se runtime environment. Message from Add or Remove Programs is 'The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if your are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed"

I was not in safe mode.

Can I delete them in the C drive programs folder.

Also, I'm going to try to copy tdsskiller.exe using xp doss copy from a flash drive.
